Once again, looking for a recommendation for .38 Special range/target ammo among the common brands. Win Whitebox, PMC, American Eagle, UMC, some mail order wadcutter? Love to hear what you've found accurate and least problematic for the cash.
Target ammo? Winchester Super-X .38 Special Super Match 148 Grain Wadcutter. The problem is they're around $18 or so a box. They sure do shoot though. They're out of stock at Midway for $165 a case. I ordered a case locally and it cost me $185 plus tax. Yes, I like them that much.
The last 150 rounds we put through the .38 have been Fiocchi 158gr FMJ. They've all gone BANG and haven't dirtied up the gun too much. Before that, I ran 100 rounds of LRN Winchesters I believe. While they shot fine, the gun did get dirtier.
Either way, our of the 2" barrel, "accuracy" is greatly diminished past 5yds
Georgia Arms makes good ammo (I just now got back from the range where I was using some ), but I don't have to get it at gun shows. They are about 1/2 hour away, I can just go to their showroom. And they only charge $10 to ship 1000 rounds of .38 spl from Villa Rica to Marietta, and that isn't a bad deal, once you figure in taking off time during the day to go there and gas. Oh, they said that shipping was free on $300+ orders.
I shoot winchester usa's out of my taurus, they are fairly accurate, not too expensive, and the walmart is close by.also picked up a box of full metal jackets at gander mountain yesterday,$.9.oo a box.38. plus p's were only $10.00 at wmart.
Accuracy could be your ammo.
Unless you're using a much older gun, try using something with a little more gee-whiz than 158gr RNL/FMJ. My 2" M649 shoots pretty well with 125gr JHP "USA" brand ammo. Shoots better with the .357 Mag version, but the .38's all group tightly at 7, 10 and 15 yards. Try switching brands too. Federal seems to load their generic "American Eagle" a little more aggressively and I've had good results with it out of a 2.5" M66.
I just bought 1000 rounds of Federal Red Box 158gr round nose ammo from http://www.ammoman.com/ for $139 shipped. I've never shot it before and it hasn't arrived here yet but should be here Monday.
The best ammo is that which you create. I have a S&W 649 2 1/2" and made my own target loads. This way, I know my loads are consistant for accuracy purposes. This is my opinion only and what has worked best for me.
