Best .223/5.56 for HD?

Hey guys, I'm sure I'll catch soome flack for this BUT I'm definitely using my saiga as my main HD gun. It is the most reliable gun I own and is also the one I shoot best with.

I'm looking for the best round to use, Right now shes loaded with 55grain FMJ and overpenatration is of a slight concern.

I was thinking something in the line of a 36-50grain vmax or JHP type bullet would be the best for imparting lots of energy and not over traveling way too far....

Also I would like to keep muzzle flash to a minumum. Here in communist NJ we're not allowed to have flash suppressors:mad:

Your thoughts?

Your thoughts?

well:
-it's been shown that some .223/5.56 ammo will actually penetrate less through walls

-you're right to want to replace your current FMJ as it will probably be ineffective unless it's a round designed to fragment in soft tissue.

-since it's your most reliable gun and the one you shoot best you won't catch me giving you gruff about going to it

-I honestly don't know enough to recommend a specific load

-move out of NJ

In before the over penetration thread take over.

I would look at a heavier version of the Vmax type bullet. The TAP line is made for your application.

Problem is, I like where I live. I just hate everyone in trenton :(

Anyways, I have heard that about .223 and not over-penetrating as much as some handguns however after seeing what this thing does to 1/4 steel plate and larger sized trees im not sure how much I believe that.

Wondering how well the 36 grain will stabilize in this gun (1:9 I believe)

might jump up to the 40 grain or maybe even 50.... probably wont change a whole lot but I'm not really sure

If 'overpenetration' is a huge concern of yours, I'd go with Hornady TAP 55/60gr loads.

If killing the intruder/BG is the primary concern, Hornady TAP 75gr or Speer 64gr SP rounds are what I would go with. I actually have 2 ARs at the ready with both Hornady loads so I can choose which I want in that situation...

its not a huge concern but I do worry slightly....

why do you think the 75gr will be more effictive then the lighter weights? I think no matter what you will get full penetration of a human

Depends on the situation. The link Carne Frio gave explains it well; but one key thought to keep in mind in penetration is that your target will not always look like a B-21 silhouette. Pretend you are shooting a handgun with two hands - how much penetration would a bullet need just to get past your arms?

Hornady TAP, end thread. It was designed specifically for this.

If that is a little too much money a varmint bullet will likely be fine as long as Kevlar and armor plates aren't involved.

I just after plinking and doing considerable damage to steel targets I just cant see even the 55gr rounds ive been using not going clean through someone.

I've punched holes in 1/4 plate steel, shot clean though car doors and out the other side(of the car). and even lined up 3 (empty) propane tanks in a row and shot clean through them all...

I hold the .223 round in high reguard and would never want to be on the recieving end of something that destructive. Maybe the light weights will deflect more then the others so i suppose thats a concern but i just dont see them being stopped very well by even a reasonably large man with his arms stretched out in front of him.
