Best .22 handgun ammo?

Is there such a thing as the best .22 ammo for handguns for personal protection..I just bought a Iver Johnson semi-auto and its going to be a secondary backup handgun on the ankle or in pocket, just wanted something more than regular .22 ammo...

There are many that claim that Winchester Power Points are what you are looking for..... I'll swear by em simply because I've yet to find a .22 that didn't love to spit em out.

Quik-shok

Quik-shok makes a hyper velocity pre-fragmented hollowpoint. It looks like a hollowpoint that has been cut into three pie slices from the front of the bullet to the rear. It is held together at the rear by a band. When it strikes solid material it acts like a regular hollowpoint. When it hits flesh it seperates into three petals. This is the same design Triton's Quick-shok ammo uses. The maker of the .22 lr stuff is Blount, INC, Lewiston, ID 83501. They make it for Magnum Performance Ballistics P.O. Box 7916 Macon, GA 31209. I got mine out of a catalog about 2 yrs ago. The catalog was having a close out sale & I picked up 500 rounds, wish I'd gotten another 500. I shot a large Norway rat with one and the performance was impressive. Every bit as explosive as what I'm use to with Stingers, perhaps even a bit more.

FYI Blount owns CCI of Lewiston, ID. They also own Federal (which is my most accurate 22 handgun ammo).

However, the CCI Stinger will provide the best results for personal protection in a 22. The fragmentation stuff will have problems reliably pentrating thick clothing.

Like Shoney I'd worry about penatration with the pre-fragmented ammo. Also, like Shoney my first thought was that CCI Stingers would probably be more than acceptable. However, some of what I've read suggests that it is best to leave the super high velocity .22lr to rifles. Some tests apparently show it being SLOWER out of a pistol barrel than regular .22lr high velocity stuff. If I used a .22lr for defense I'd probably use CCI Mini-Mag.

For an informed opinion, go to the following site for velocities of ammo tested:

http://www.naaminis.com/
go down to and hit table of ballistics
go down to velocities

I picked the longest barrel tested, which was only 1 5/8, but it gives a basis from which you can form an opinion and get information. The spread will increase with longer barrels.

I like Stingers, Vipers and Mini-Mags (in that order) for defense.

Mini-Mags are consistent and reasonably priced. I like keeping some around always; they do well in all my guns. Also, the packaging is great to hold rounds in later when plinking with your .22 rifle.
