I'm specifically asking about quality feel and reliability. My first gun ever was a Kimber Eclipse Carry back in 2012. Gun had a ridiculous amount of issues. About 700 rounds in and I gave up. FTF's and FTE's. Nothing I did worked. Sent it back and it did the same thing. Again my budget is around $1400 (possibly up to $1600). Been looking at the Sigs and Springfields. What do you guys think and what's your experiences been like?

P.s. Not for concealed carry. Home defense and range days for its use.

Dan Wesson Specialist SS ($1462) can be had for that or maybe the duty coat version ($1683) at your higher price. Valor ($1427, $1533, $1673) is also near these prices from grabagun.

You cannot buy a finer firearm.

By a stroke of luck I got a Colt Series 70 in MA for 800 bucks. Slide has a few pits but It's a great pistol.

Sure it's a 550 dollar pistol in some other state. I don't live there!

I hear it all the time.

In MA the pistol has to have been here and 'registered' before a certain date. Can't buy new examples either. Colt won't submit pistols for the MA tests.

Colt.

Did I mention Colt?

Pretty much this.

If you are willing to pony up a little more money, Dan Wesson represents a pretty decent step up. But at the budget you are indicating, you won't do better than Colt.

Well there's Colt, but then there is a Springfield Range Officer and you'll have enough left over for a case of ammo, a couple extra mags and a trigger job.

+1 for the Rampant Pony. I have three Colts, two .45s and a 9mm. I love shooting the 9mm. I picked up all of mine for under $700 each.

I have four Series 70 Government Models and have had no issues with any of them. I bought the first one new in the box in 1973.

If I have fail to feed issues, I did it.

If I have fail to fire issues, I did it.

$1400 you say??

I'd buy 3 1911's ;)
RIA 10mm, RIA 9mm/.22TCM, RIA Micro 45.

They shoot better than the average 1911 owner can,
and if you get one confiscated by the fuzz after a shoot,
you can go buy another one inexpensively ;)

Hate to admit it but I agree with Big Shriek. I've shot a LB Thunder Ranch, a Ed Brown Executive Elite and a Wilson CQB. The fit and finish was great and they all shot flawlessly. However, I didn't shoot any of them better than my 1979 Combat Commander, SW Goverment model or my RIA 9mm which all 3 cost less than $1400.
By no means am I knocking the higher grade 1911s, I would love to own one.

I have nothing to go on as I have only a Ruger SR1911 and have not shot any other 1911. I think it was around 700 bucks. Awesome in my opinion. Can't shoot my Shield 9mm or Sig p320 nearly as well.

I have had failure to feeds, but I think it is only with the Chip McCormick magazines.

Colt, hands down. The Officer's Model is a good carry piece.

Use factory magazines and enjoy it.

My first field test is to fire all the magazines as fast as I can through the new pistol. Haven't had a failure yet. These are good firearms.

I have 5 1911s. A Colt series 80 Govt, a Colt LW Commander, a Springfield Armory Ultra Compact and an extremely accurate Kimber Custom (Pre series II) but the most accurate 1911 that I own is a Springfield Armory MC Operator that I bought NIB for $1000. I think that MSRP is $1300 but they are out there for much less. It is one heck of a shooter!!!

Or a Colt Wiley Clapp Government ....Super nice gun, but a definite small step down from a Dan Wesson. They others are a larger step down. Warning, imo, stepping down to a Kimber might break an ankle!
