I've got a new build put together that I'm trying to work up a load for, and I'm having a little trouble getting it to group the bullet I want to shoot.
The rifle is a 28" Shilen select match varmint contour 6mm rem 1:8 twist barrel on a Savage 110 action in a bedded and pillared Boyd's pro varmint stock.
I've been trying to work up a load with 105 gr Berger Hybrid Target bullets and RL-22 powder. When I decided on this bullet to try, I looked on Berger's website and it said a 1:8 or faster twist would work. I order some and when I get them I see on the box, "1:7 twist or faster". I'm starting to believe the latter is right because the best group I've been been able to get with them is about 2" at 100 yards. I should also mention I'm at about 3000 ft elevation. I still thought I was pushing them fast enough to be on the safe side of stabilization. My chronograph is showing 3350 fps at just under a max load.
I built the rifle to be a sure-fire tack driver with heavier bullets, and I thought the 1:8 would allow me to shoot everything but the 115 grainers. But I'm starting to think I needed a 1:7.
I have another 6mm rem that I load 85 gr HPBT Gamekings for, I tried them in the Savage and I get one ragged hole for a 5 round group.
Do you think I am indeed just on the wrong side of stabilizing the 105 gr Hybrids with a 1:8 twist?
