Beretta tinkering question...

I have heard of a Beretta 92/96 G. I think thats it... Its a standard FS with the exception that it has a decocker only. No safty, just the decocking lever. Then I heard someone say that they just had a spring in them to reset the safty to the off position. Is this true, and does it mean I can convert my 96 to a G model by puting in a spring?

Thanks for the help.

I am 99% sure that ther eis more to it than this...otherwise, there are hundreds of Beretta owners who want a "G", but can't get it (G's are sold to police only). However, the best place to ask this would be the Beretta Forum...as a Beretta owner, you ought to be checking that out occasionaly anway. :)

If I understand it, the safety on the 92FS works like this: rotate it down and it de-cocks the hammer and stays down (which disconnects the trigger bar so the gun can't be fired). Also, with the safety down, the interanl FP driver is rotated out of the way.

The other "decock only" version the safety lever is rotated forward to decock the hammer, but will not stay down on it's own because it is spring loaded to come back up (into the firing position). I assume this is to prevent a cop from accidentally leaving his safety on and pulling a dead gun when he needs it. I doubt the difference between models is just an added spring: I'd wager the safety assembly has to be changed and maybe the slide is cut to accept it.

it's a lot more dificult than just changing a spring. If that were all i'd love to have all my Berettas be G models...

A standard FS safety CANNOT be converted to a decocker only merely by changing/adding a spring. I had actually spoken to Langdon Tactical about this, and I was told there would have to be a modification to the slide. In other words, it wouldn't be worth it. If you want a decocker only, buy an Elite II.
