Beretta or Browning ?

I have a chance to pick up either a NIB Beretta 92FS (Italian model) or a Belgium made Browning Hi Power Signature model (two tone) with the wrap-around Pachmayr grips.

Don't really need another 9mm pistol, but these two came up, and both are very fine (un-fired except factory) examples.

Which one would you consider a better choice

Yes, I know .... what kind of question is that ...

An addiction, you do realize.

Both are fine pistols and this is a win-win situation. You did not mention whether there was a price difference???

That would factor into my equation; although I already have a 92FS Inox and would therefore choose the Browning.

Do you have the chance to handle both? Pick the one you like best if you can not take both. :)

Let us know which one you chose.

I have both and they're both great, nice shooting guns (though I think they're both less than optimal for self-defense, but that's a whole other story).

I'd go with the Browning though. It's hard to beat the feel in the hand and the natural pointability of a BHP. Though to really get the best out of a BHP, you do need to tinker with it a bit.

The Browning is approximately 150 more, probably due to the two-tone treatment, and being a Signature series Hi-power.

I would go with the Browning every time. I don't care for the Beretta. I've shot 'em and just don't like 'em.

Might come down to use and what OP feels more comfortable in using:

Cocked and locked Browning?

Hammer down, DA first shot Beretta?

In shooting, I always felt the Browning, though I love it, torgues quite a bit to the right and up. I was never as good with it as a Beretta 92, Sig 226 or a 1911.

I prefer the Beretta, but would actually probably pick up the Browning first. I'm not sure about their availability but I'm pretty sure the 92 will be in active production for my lifetime or at least a very long time.

Future availability aside, the BHP is an old, traditional, single action design. The Beretta is a more modern design, with DA/SA lockwork. Both are well made, reliable, pistols, so it really comes down (as it always does) to personal preference. In an era where the 9mm Parabellum is routinely chambered in auto pistols that would have been considered .25 ACP size only a few years ago, both are larger than needed for the 9mm cartridge. While both basic guns are available in .40 S&W, that chambering has not been without problems.

My logic would say the Hi-Power would be a better choice due to availability. You can easily find a 92 later on.

However, my personal taste would lean towards the 92. No possible hammer bite and no mag disconnect.

I have to ask what is a signature Hi Power? I have heard of the Practical, which is tutoned but never a Signature.

This is a practical

Is the "Signature" an anniversary model? I am not familiar with this model. I have both a MK III Browning Hi Power Silver Chrome (factory chrome model with adjustable sights), and an Italian made Beretta 92FS. Both are accurate, and reliable, but the BHP a bit more accurate, for me at least. I would go with the BHP now, and the 92FS later.

My vote is:

Yes, I love sharing that photo.

For clarification I believe Signature model refers not to the gun itself but the Pachmayr signature grips with the Browning logo. They came on the Practical and the hard chrome BHPs with the gold triggers.

If it is tutoned with pachmayr signature grips it is a practical like the one I posted a pic of. On that gun I replaced the grips. Practicals in excellent condition are normally priced at a premium.

I would buy the BHP because as others pointed out the long term availability if the 92FS will be better.
