Beretta Nano

Took my concealed carry class (16 hours in IL) and am in process of applying. Saw a Beretta Nano at the LGS and think it might be the one. On line reviews are good. Anyone out there have first hand experience with a Nano?

I don't own one but I've shot one. I found the trigger pull to be very long and seemingly fairly heavy. The gun does feel more "substantial" than its size would indicate, it seems much heftier than many of the similarly-sized competition. All in all, you could certainly do much worse :)

Nano - S&W Shield

I have owned the Nano for about two months and really like it. The trigger pull is a little long as GSG has noted. The Shield has a much crisper trigger. But for some reason I am more accurate with the Nano. Both are fine guns and comparable in size. Recommend shooting both before you decide

The trigger is pretty long, not the best. It definitely feels well made and is a little chunk. They are reliable and hit well, very "glockish" in that regard and in others.

Overall I would personally choose something different for CCW but the Nano is good for alot of folks.

^ Wow.

You must like your BIL.

The Nano is a good shooter, don't get me wrong, I just found it a little big for my porpoises.

Mine is a negative review. I bought one when they first came out, (which may be the problem). I had many fte problems. Beretta said the problem was ammo less than 124 grain, then they said it was a cheap ammo problem.
Mine had issues regardless of ammo used. I sent it in for warranty work after about two years of frustration. They repaired it and sent it back, (cost me $30 for the shipping to them). As soon as it came back to the dealership that I used, I had them put it up for sale on consignment as I did not trust the gun, nor Beretta for denying that the fire arm had problems and blaming ammo. All my other small 9mm's had no problem with the ammo.
My favorite pocket 9 is the Diamondback DB9. Mine has been very reliable.

Before choosing a model do a search on Youtube for problems, eg. Beretta Nano Problems. do that for each gun that you are considering.

I've been very impressed with the build quality and accuracy of the couple that I've fired, but I'm just not a big fan of the trigger. Some people will argue that a longer and heavier pull makes sense in a gun like this, but the Walther PPS's trigger sets the standard for what other companies should aspire to with the triggers in their ultra-slim 9mm/.40 pistols, in my opinion (I guess except for Kahr, which does its own thing). Some like the trigger, though, so check it out for yourself before you take what I said as gospel.

I will second the PPS. In that size the shield seems to draw a strong crowd too. I thought the nano was nice, but the shield had the better trigger. I thought the pps was better for me in most all respects over the shield. The XDS versions are the same size as the pps. I havent had the benefit of side by side comparison of those two.
Find what works for you, that's the key ;)

Side by side comparison

I was at a gun store today that had both the Nano and the Shield in stock. Got to look at them side by side, work the actions hold em, compare em etc. Wish I could have shot them but . . .
The trigger pull just does not feel that different. Both slides pull back easily. The Shield does have an external safety and I like that, but it's not critical.

I have to say that I am liking the Nano more than the Shield. I think it has to do with cleaner lines. Which doesn't have much to do with shooting, and style has little to do with the real function of a gun . . . still . . .

I mean I owned a hi-point. Talk about ugly.

Well, I'm leaning toward the Nano. Will keep you posted.

Guess I need to find and look at a Walther.

I bought my wife a Nano a few months ago. As others have said it has a long heavy trigger pull. IMO the trigger pull is awkwardly long. Also I'm not a fan of the disassembly of this firearm. You need a flathead screwdriver or something similar to break this gun down.
If I were to do this all over I would have probably got her a glock 42.

Of the two you looked at, I'd go with the Shield. I've owned the one with safety and the one without. I prefer the non-safety version. They are great little guns. The Shield is easier to shoot for me. Good luck!

Researched Walther and . . .

I researched the Walther PPS and while it sounds good I'd have to save a few more $$$ which is okay, but not sure where'd I'd find a Walther to buy.

All this discussion has got me rethinking all the CC choices. The LGS has some Ruger pistols in 380.

Does anyone out there carry a 22LR as their CC gun? If the stats are right about actual use of a carry gun then one would be close enough to do the job with a 22LR.

Just thinking out loud here.

Or a 25 caliber. What about those.

So much to learn and so many choices.

Fun stuff nonetheless.

The Nano is my warm weather carry, and is good to go.

Make sure (ask for the serial # and look it up on Beretta site) it is a resent manufactured one, the very early models (like some new guns) add issues.

Mine has been perfect when I feed it 124gr. 115gr is okay, but has infrequent fail-to-extracts.

About Beretta: I broke my Nano last month, round count 956, slide catch broke so wouldn't hold slide open on empty magazine. Called CS, told them exactly what was broken and what part they could send me. Instead they sent me a free two way UPS slip to ship it in, they want to look it over on their dime. So my experience is they stand behind their product.

For CCW, forget the caliber wars. Select the largest caliber that you will ACTUALLY carry everyday. Having a gun on you is more important.

See Ferguson for reasons to carry larger calibers. A motivated attacker could suffer more from a thrown rock than a .25 or .22 unless you hit them in the middle of their forehead.

Buying the Nano

Well, after more research and looking at a Ruger LCP I found a good buy on a Nano at a Rural King and made the purchase. Given the Holidays I won't be able to pick it up until Friday, but that's okay. It will be a belated merry Christmas to me.

Will let you know how the first trip to the range goes.
