Beretta 96d

Anybody have one? I am waiting an interview for employment with the INS. The only approved sidearm for new Inspectors is the 96d. I dont I even ever seen one.
I know it is basically a DAO .40 caliber version of 92 but thats about it.
How is Recoil? Trigger pull? Accuracy?

Thanks.

I had a 96 a few years ago. Fine shooter. If you're familiar with the 92 series, the 96 is IDENTICAL except it shoots the 40 *&*. I got rid of it because I don't really like the 40 *&* round...but the gun itself is fine.

My wife shoots our 96 for qualifing and for her CCW test. Good gun, exceptionally reliable and easy to handle. I would have no problems recommending it. Our only problem has been the magazine followers got brittle and broke, but they were really old. New ones are $12 to replace and easy to change.

My agency issues the identical gun, the 96D Brigadier. I love mine and carry it everywhere (also serves as my off-duty firearm as well). I also use it to compete in IDPA.

Trigger pull is long but extremely smooth. Mine shoot to point of aim out of the box and has been utterly reliable. Only trouble I had was when I tried to use a Heitt Red Buff shock buffer. Pistol did not like it and jammed so much the first range session that I removed it immediately.

Recoil is, of course, heavier than the 9mm but not too much. Pistol is easily controlable during rapid fire and not intimidating at all.

While serving with my previous department I carried a 92F and thought that the DAO concept was foolishly unnecessary. When I joined my current department uniformed officers had to carry issue firearms-then the 96D with an NP3 finish. After using the DAO for a while, I became quite accostomed to it and now actually prefer it to TDO.

You can't go wrong with a Beretta, no matter what operation mode it comes in!

Good luck in your interview!

Occasionally shoot with INS agents; got free boxes of ammo from them due to frustration with 96.

Your results may vary; I prefer 9x19 version.

Just yesterday I got the oportuninty to shoot both the 92 FS and the 96D as my brother owns the 96D.

Although I didn't find much differance in either one, maybe the 96D has just a tiny bit more recoil... it is just flat out hard to tell. I found it a pleasure to shoot and control.

But I do like my 92 FS better, simply because I like the 15 round mags better than the 11 round mags of the 96D.

Cost wise the 92 FS is much cheaper to shoot hands down as we purchased ammo this Saturday mine ran $8.99 a box and my brothers .40 S&W ran $12.99 a box... I know, its time to buy a Dillon progressive press as I will also be shooting allot of .40 S&W after my Glock 35 gets here.

Then we will reload both.

9mm is ok but I really enjoy the 40 and the power of that round. It sounds louder and hits harder than my nine. There is a little more recoil but the gun is large enough so that its not hard at all.

I have tremendous flexibility in what I can carry for duty purposes, and I carry a 96D, although I am a minority of one in a sea of Glocks. The mainspring is different on the D series guns than the F series guns, resulting in a smoother, lighter trigger pull than the 1st shot on a DA/SA version of the same guns, and no transition issues. I also prefer a little more trigger resistance than the Glock type trigger, and I find that I can fire the 96 better at longer distances (over 50 yards) than a Glock. YMMV.
