Beretta 96 OK?

Have heard stories of the Beretta 96 not being built with enough steel to handle the .40 round and that it is prone to breakage, is this true?

Hello. I can only speak to one example of the 96; an officer on my shift had one and shot it quite a bit. It developed a crack on the breechface, on the lower right side as you're looking at it. You could see light coming through it.

He used only factory loads.

Anyway, he sent the gun back to Beretta and they said there was no crack!!!!!!

He got rid of that pistol.

Other than that, the gun was both accurate and reliable and I don't know if this problem was common or not. I do know that we're both pretty well turned off of Beretta and their "great" customer service.

Best.

mvdemarco-

I have several .40 caliber Berettas and have had no problems with any of them. My agency issues over 4000 of them and there are no problems to speak of. My 96D Brigadier has many thousands of rounds of full power ammo through it with no ill effects.

If in the rare instance you do have a problem, my experience with Beretta customer service has been excellent.

Beretta pistols are rugged, reliable, accurate, durable, and not as difficult to carry as some would lead you to believe.

Sincerely,

Tom C

The best .40 I ever shot was a Beretta Border Marshal--far better than the Glock 23 or Smith & Wesson TSW 4013 based on my experience with all three.

I have experience with only one 96. It made it through a complete academy class and has survived many more rounds since then w/o a problem.

After 5000 rounds still looks like new.
I think the main thing: keep your gun clean and oiled it will last your life time and the one of your grandkids.;)

I'm going to buy another beretta either 96 inox or the new Vertec looks sharp

I have a Beretta Cougar in 40S&W. It has given me no problems so I know they have the capability to do it right. I haven't experienced the 96 though.

Only problem so far with my 96FS Centurion is that, when new, the rear sight wasn't adjusted to point of aim.

My wifes 96 has held up really well. It is reasonable accurate (good enough for her ccw test), very very reliable and easy to maintain.

The only problem in 7 years has been that mag follower broke. I had to replace two of them in less then a month. The hold open tab broke off. Now that I have a spare none have broken in 5 years. Probably just a bad batch.

I just shot it 2 weeks ago. Lots of fun to shoot, but it is big for the caliber. I guess I like the md84 a bit better for that "style" of gun.

Anyway, if it got destroyed somehow, I would replace it, so what more can one say in recommendation?
