Beretta 92S Locking Block Dilemma

Just picked up my Italian Police trade-in Beretta pistol from Classic Firearms. I wrote about this yesterday and a while ago (before I got it...).

Gun is nice and clean, tight and I am very happy with it. But one thing concerned me - while cleaning and field-stripping I had the barrel assy in hand. I was cleaning and about to lube a tiny bit and the barrel was slanted on the table to my hand. It slipped and fell all of about 3-4 inches and the LB popped out! The pin was (I think) pushed in but should the block fall out that easily? I was under the impression that you had to take out the small roll-pin holding it to the barrel for removal.

I played with it a bit and was able to finally get it back in without taking the roll pin out. The assy seems loose but this is my first experience with Berettas, I'm a bit concerned about this. I've watched videos and with the pin pushed to remove the barrel from the gun I can't really tell how loose it is. But none have just fallen out!

So, any thoughts? Use until it gives up or replace with the newest LB kit (the one I have is a first generation, I guess). Thanks for all info!

Older style locking blocks could be remove easily. Replacement blocks required taking out the pin.

My Beretta originally came with the old style which I removed all the time when cleaning the pistol. When the block broke and I replaced it with the new style block, it require tapping out the pin. Now, the block does not come out unless I first remove the pin.

Thanks a bunch for that information. When the block fell out after hitting the bench (lightly 3-4 inches...) I wondered if the age of the gun and wear might be something to think about. You've set me straight and I appreciate it!

BTW that sale at Classic Firearms is ALL GONE!!! At first they showed boxes and boxes FULL of 92S pistols all just tossed in! Looked today to MAYBE get another and it said 'Sold Out.' I guess $299 was a really good deal!!!

Yeah, that was a good deal. Don't worry about that assembly. I have two Berettas with the old-style assembly. One comes out easily and one doesn't. NBD.

Thanks, I'm feeling better and better about this. Took it down (again) today and cleaned a bit more, greased the locking block and put a dab on the rails, too. Used some flourescent yellow fingernail polish to make the front (tiny...) sight easier to see. Now I just need to get to the range and air this baby out! :D:D

You will love it. They are studs. Here is a true story. My FiL reloaded 40 caliber for the first time. He made a technical error in his first batch of reloads. We both shot a magazine full. His brand-new full-sized CZ cracked its frame. My used and abused Beretta 96 partially field stripped itself and has been fine ever since. They are tough accurate pistols with decent triggers. You will not be disappointed.
