Beretta 92FS in IPSC?

Worked an IPSC match this weekend. I had a booth set up in the vendor's area. Didn't really think about it, but shooters are a little preoccupied on the day they attend the match, and gun rights take a back burner for the day - gave me a lot of people-watchin time.

I watched one guy sign in, and noted the back of his shirt. He had an IPSC match shirt from some other state from some past year, and what I really noticed were the 2 Beretta 92F's under the logo.

A Beretta 92? The thought baffled me, as I have a Beretta 92FS Vertec, and I can't imagine that horrible trigger and first-shot-double-action being able to perform in an IPSC match. There were around 200 shooters there this weekend, and I didn't see one 92F, but the thought intrigued me.

I was home today, and went shootin. I brought along my "new" Para P14 to practice for this coming month's IPSC match I'll be competing in, and I decided to throw the Beretta in the truck too.

After thoroughly disappointing myself with the Para, I broke the 92FS out. I was mimicking actual IPSC rounds, with the load & ready, hands up, walk and shoot, and all that jazz, using real IPSC targets. The 92FS did suprisingly well (or I did suprisingly well?). Somehow, I even seemed to overcome the first shot in double action.

Am I nuts? Am I going to leave the Para home the day of the match, and bring the Beretta?!? In 9mm no less? Horrible trigger, unreachable safety, and the low-powered 9mm, vs tricked-out 38 Supers?

Say it ain't so!!

SO

Why do guys (this IS a guy problem) think equipment will make them winners?

Oh, the ego............

Shoot whatever gun you want, have fun, there will ALWAYS be someone better.
I actually believe it's the shooter not the gun.

Weshoot -

Oh, you haven't seen me shoot pistol. Well yes, there's always someone better. Usually, at IPSC, there's about 98% of the shooters there that are better. I was once beaten by a horse shooting a revolver, competing for carrots. :D

I need subpar equipment and equipment failures to have an excuse to be there!!;)

AMEN! croyance. Ernest is a machine.I took an LTT course, and well,we're just not worthy. You here things about him but untill you see it for yourself, words don't do him justice.

Polish up the hammer/sear contact surfaces and you'll find that the trigger pull is much better. I don't know about the Vertec, but if you order and install a mainspring for a 96D from Beretta USA it will cut down the double action pull significantly. The spring only costs about $2.

Oh heck, last match we were at there were people running Berretas. You get to be in your own division, Production, competing against other DA guns HK, Glock, CZ, etc. All are scored as minor so the 9mm isn't a disadvantage. First shot must be from DA even if gun is capable of cocked & locked. Unless you're a Glock and then it's sproing and go. Seems to me that competition isn't as stiff in production as say L10 where we've been losing, but there will be several people at least that will just plain tear you up with their GLocks.

DA first shot? Imagine my pain as I watched a shooter with a baaad flin-cH! wrestle his DAO HK thru six stages.

Going to Black Creek? Try not to scare Dennis again, they really are nice guys, came down and shot w/ us at Blackwater. Be a good "safety nazi" for the day and try not to stir the pot too much.

Oh yeah, this would look great in the...Competition forum. Got a USPSA member # yet so we can look you up and share the pain? :D

The only thing Dennis should have to fear now is dying of old age while he's waiting for me to double-tap.:D

Been practicin away the backwoods safety procedure, and replaced it with a good-little-boy safety procedure, but I still can't hit squat. Walkin and chewin gum has never been a big strong point of mine.;)

Slow, it's relative. So there I was scoring a guy, very dedicated who shot an entire 6 stage match with a 2" barrel 5 shot revo. Able to go sit down and rest a spell on that one, specially with six shots than a mandatory reload. Ow! guy is tougher than I am. Hmm, never tried walking and chewing gum, I did try peeing and chewing gum once though, all I know is the gum ended up on the ground...

Have you discussed the Berreta plan with the spousal financial officer? All I see there is more holsters, mag carriers, reloading dies, range bags, etc. In other words, a golden opportunity for you.

Burrito 92 for IPSC?

I have an Elite II 92. Shoot a fair amount of IDPA with it (bounce between this and a Kimber). That fist shot out the holster isn't as bad as you might think.

Practice for 20 minutes the day before the match on just the first two shots out the holster - you're there.

The E2 is really smooth - mentally you just have to coach yourself to hang with that sight picture longer than you normally would due to longer pull.

I have heard the an action job by LTT does wonders beyond this.

Good luck.
