I just bought a Beretta 92 with 2 hi cap factory mags and night sights,it has slight wear but is in good shape.I paid $489 for it is this a good price for this gun?New ones were available for $599 with standard sights and 2 10rd. mags.Did i make a good choice? How good are these guns? How do these guns hold up in the long run?Does the fact that it is used really matter? Also the barrel moves slightly when the slide is locked back but i have seen this on many beretta pistols is this just cause it is used?Should i get a new barrel?Any help would be great.Thanks.Oh by the way how do you tell if the gun is made in italy? It is marked made in italy on the right side of the slide?

1911:

I answered your post in the Beretta Forum but I will add to it here:

If possible do the following:

1. Lay a Beretta, Sig and Glock side by side.

2. Cycle the slide on each and compare.

3. Rack the slide on each and compare.

4. Pop a mag in and compare.

5. Chamber a round by pulling the slide back and compare.

6. Pop a mag out and compare.

Chances are, you will notice how crisp and responsive the Beretta is during all of these comparisons. The Beretta is not an IPSC 200,000 round weapon but it is a finely crafted tool. Clean it frequently, avoid hot ammo and your Grandchildren will thank you if the Lord tarries in His return. Goto www.greent.com and click on Beretta-L to see just how much thought goes into the Beretta.
As for the locking block, remember, if a rapid field strip is needed, it doesn't come out---so it's not a problem. As for the take-down lever, if you let someone close enough to get your slide off----well----with all due respect, shame on ya. I was taught to keep a six foot distance between me and the bad guy to avoid such things and now it's habit.
I have used Sigs and Glocks and they are great guns. The Glock is the most durable of the three excluding the plastic sights but in all honesty,(I can already feel the heat of the flames), I have had more trouble with Sigs and component failure than any other high dollar pistol.

Beretta 92FS's are outstanding pistols. I have bet my life on one, and there is one in my wife's car as I write this. Today, I carry my all time favorite self defense gun, a Colt .45acp Lightweight Commander, but had and have no worries about defending my life with a 92.

I had one through which I'd fired 23,000 +/- rounds, h.ps. and ball, and never a twitch. Have a buddy who had 35,000 rounds through his and no problems.

Keep the slide rails lubricated and DO NOT TAKE OFF the right grip panel. There's a tiny spring under there that if it's lost, the pistol will not fire. (Well, it will but that's another story.) Enjoy that 92! J.B.

I have seen them from $489.00 new in the box with 2 10 rd.mags, which is what I paid a couple of months ago, to $599.00 . I could have had a used Itallian 92 in excellent shape with 1/15 rd. mag for the same price but I chose the american made with 2/10 rds. I don't know which would have been the better price, but I think I got a great pistol and I am totally satisfied with it. I really like the feel of it and the accuracy. I would have liked the 92/96 conversion model if I had been able to come up with the extra $150.00 at the time. If it is made in itally, it will have it stamped on it . :)

My hand is "happier" with my 1911s, but I've put a few hundred rounds through a 92FS. It's easy to shoot; easy to hit multiple targets since the gun is relatively heavy for the cartridge. No recoil to amount to anything.

Since they seem to trade for around $500, cash money...

Enjoy.

My beretta 92FS had digested over 2600 rounds without a single jam of any kind. IMO its the most reliable pistol made and mine is also very accurate. Beretta pistols aren't glocks when you consider durability but they will last a while. the weakest part on the beretta is the locking block which takes in all the recoil of the whole gun. this part can be changed and is only $50. also it is supposed to last at least 10-20 thousand rounds. the frame should last well over 50,000 rounds and the slide over 70,000.
