Beretta 92, opinions?

Hey guys I have always wanted a Beretta 92. This may sound foolish but being a 1911 .45 fan i can't figure out why i want one. I just do good enough reason for me,now my wife is another story! Anyway tell me what you think of them. Also are hicaps available at a decent price anymore? Many say the gun is too big but it is a full size combat handgun, compactness was not a design feature right? I have a Ruger P95 and I don't see where it is any smaller than a Beretta 92. A 92 has an alloy frame this makes it lighter right? Since my wife "adopted" my Ruger P95 I need a new 9mm.Does anyone else here have this problem with wifes taking their guns over? While the Beretta is not near as thin as a 1911 it can be carried for CCW right?
Thanks,45automan

I love mine, especially after swapping the mainspring for a 1911 mainspring. Lightened the DA considerably. I've got a carry holster on order.

45automan, I like my Beretta 92FS a lot more that the 1911 I shot in the army 30 years ago. I think it is one of best looking handguns. I almost never carry it because it is big, but may take in hiking this fall.

Concealed carry of a Beretta 92 would be difficult. It's reasonably light and no longer or taller than a Colt Government Model, but its thickness tends to cause tell-tale bulges.

Concealment aside, the 92FS is a fine pistol. It's good looking, accurate, reliable, and comfortable to shoot. Full capacity magazines are still available for under $50, something which can't be said for most other double-stack semiautos.

Adding tritium night sights could be a problem since the front blade is part of the slide.

Good gun for people with really big hands. A couple of my 260+, 6'4" plus buddies all love the 92s.

But Matt is right - concealment would be a real problem other than a fanny pack.

I won't fall into the routine that some seem to do..delight in bash everything. A 92 is a good piece in any collection - really looks neat with the wood grips btw - I've owned a few wish still had them now. Now it is large - same firepower as a Glock 19 for example, and some don't like all the kaka on the slide of course, but its well made and as Ayoob said "has the slickest slide out of the box." For "real" use like CCW I'd take a Glock 17 for a 9mm....weight if nothing else and a slimmer grip and more streamlined, but a Beretta serves well. If don't get hicaps though I wouldn't bother - too big for 10 rds .

I love mine, go and get you one! Smooth, accurate, and reliable! Heck, your wife might even give you back your P95 after she gets ahold of the beretta!
Can't help you with the carry issue (not allowed in Ohio, dangit!) If you are looking for a carry beretta you could consider the 92 compact you can get the specs at berettausa.com. But I know of lots of beretta list members that carry their 92's.

-quickly: Night sights aren't a problem, they just drill out the front sight and put the tritium tube in and replace the back sight.

Great gun. My biggest complaint was that the sights on mine were a little off at first, but nothing a few whacks with a hammer couldn't solve.

Accurate, shoots nice, good capacity, cheap and plentiful hi-caps (better than ANY other gun), looks great, and ridiculously reliable.

I've carried mine (Bianchi Ranger holster is my favorite way to carry it), but I don't do so often. It is a full sized gun, but if you take a close look, it's not as wide forward of the trigger as most guns its size, which makes carry on the waist easy.

I dont think they're ugly and I wont argue accuracy and durability, My arguement against the gun is function! I can carry a sig 226 (A full size duty pistol)and it's more comfortable in my hand, Not as wide in the grip, The decocker is where i can reach it without moving my hand! I can say the same thing about the S&W 5906, except the slide mounted gadgetry, the gun is too big for it's purpose! However there are a million and one Fullcap mags around....

Well, if you're like me 45automan, you probably have seen the Die Hard and Lethal Weapon series more times than you can count...

At least, that's what did it for me... ;)

I think they are great guns. I just sold my Border Marshal model to a friend. I used it for carry and I am not that big a person, 5'10", 160lbs. I think if I can do it, anyone can. I used a Kramer paddle holster.

I've got a 92. It's a 92SB, made in Italy about 1985 or sometime before they built a plant in the US to make the 92F. It's very well made, the fit and finish is great.

The 92 has several positive and a few negative points. The quality of the gun is the most obvious positive point. Realiablity with good ammo is another. Ability to tolerate and fire a wide range of ammo is another. Two examples: More than a decade ago there was a large quantity of egyptian 9mm imported into the US. It had a very hard primer and wouldn't fire in Sig 226's. My 92 ate it and asked for more, even though it was corrosive (92 has a chrome lined bore).
I didn't feed it any more of that once I found out it was corrosive, but it didn't hurt the gun. Another example, sometimes you'll get a bulge in the bottom of 9mm brass when you full lenght resize it. I first discovered that little "issue" when I ran 1000 rounds of 9mm through my dillion with RCBS dies. Those rounds jammed my girlfriend's Glock, once again my 92 ate them with no problems.

The minus side of the 92 is getting the first round off. You have to fight with a safety that is upside down for us Americans (up is off) then you have to suffer through a very long double action trigger pull, or cock the hammer. This is where Glock rules, with a Glock you just pull that little savage out of the holster and start blasting.

My 92 is great, I'll never sell it, but I'm a Glock person when it comes to buying new guns. :)

have shot them, 2 of them to be exact, i like them.
but i like the tarus pt92 better, #1, cocked and locked is an option. #2 paid less, shoots as good or better in different areas.
#3 doesnt have that outward curve at the bottom of the front strap on the grip, it's straight.
thats pretty much why i like it better.

seeing as you like the .45 u might be attracted to the cocked and locked option on the tarus.
but having shot both i will say that the beretta is a dang fine gun and you cant go wrong with it.

while u are burying your head in the sand i will be out doing something about the problem, excuse me if i tramp upon your skull.

I've put a couple of hundred or so rounds through a stainless 92; easy to hit with, given the absence of recoil. I'm a 1911 afficionado, so that's what I carry, but for non-concealed-carry usage there're no flies on the 92.

Love my 92FS but yes, the safety is not the greatest because you can't carry cocked and locked. It's very accurate and easy shooting. Hi caps are readily available and much cheaper than lots of other makes. My wife has just about taken over mine. I've carried it concealed just stick in the SOB and I'm not big at all; 5'10" 145 soaking wet.

I love my 92 Border Marshall. It fits me perfectly and I DON'T have a big hand. I thought it would be too big for me but it feels great. I'm just getting used to the heavy DA pull, but it's not terrible. This gun is a real pleasure.

I could tell in your posts that your a .45 man and so am I. I prefer the 1911 because of the design and I TRUST bigger bullets. When it comes to 9mm I think the best full sized 9mm is the Beretta 92FS. If your going to get a 9mm get the most out of it with the 92FS. I own a COLT 1991A1 and a Beretta 92FS BUY ONE!!

I got my SS 92FS about 5 years ago and is one of my favorite 9mm pistol. It is accurate, reliable and good looking pistol. I carried mine for about 2 years under t-****s in a IWB Summer Special and I'm not that big (5' 10" and 165lb). Currently my favorite 9mm carry pistol is H&K P7M8 but I still carry the 92FSonce in a while.
