Beretta 92 for CC

I'm looking at a Beretta 92 as a carry gun. Anyone have any opinions or info on this? Would I be better off with a different pistol?

I've toted the Beretta a few times, but honestly it's kind of heavy. I don't find the size unconcealable, though it is on the outer edge of what I can get away with under normal circumstances (I'm 5'11", 160 lbs). The size is uncomfortable, however. When I sit down, the muzzle hits the chair, while the butt digs into my ribcage. And the weight is a bit much. Get a good belt and try it, though I expect that you may want to try something else in a short while. If I open-carried, it would be my first choice.

It's BIG! Have carried the 92 concealed 24/7 (OK...not usually while sleeping or showering). It is a load on your hip. Doesn't conceal nearly as well as a 1911. I can think of any number of other CC pistols to carry, but...if you like the Beretta, get one of the compact versions. The full size grip of the 92/96 produces a significant "print", even with loose clothing. Under a coat or winter jacket...no problem. Forget the Safety/Decocker. Carry with one up the spout and the weapon OFF SAFE (it is perfectly safe to carry this way). Avoid rubber grips (Hogue, Pachmayer, etc.); they will increase the print thru your clothing and slow your draw by grabbing at any loose cloth as you attempt to clear the weapon from the holster. Use a little skateboard tape on the front and/or backstrap instead.

My Beretta (stainless Italian 9mm) was my first gun, so I'm a little partial to it. I've got 7 hi-caps, 3 of which are stainless, and it's my first choice for tactical matches (due to the capacity, accuracy, and lack of recoil).

Anyway, while it is easily possible to carry, I'd go with a smaller gun if carrying was my main purpose. Personally, I'm rather partial to the mid-size guns (like the Beretta Centurian, Glock 19/23, Para-Ord P13.45, Walther P99, Sig 229). You'll average giving up about two rounds of ammo with pre-ban mags (none post ban), but it's worth the ease of carry. Personally, I also like the size and feel of the mid-sized guns.

If you do decide to carry the Beretta, my favorite way is in a Bianchi Ranger holster. Nylon pancake type holster with a thumbsnap. It hugs the waist tight, and is very comfy.

I agree with everyone else. I happen to be carrying mine right now. It is kind of heavy compared to the glocks and other polymer guns I sometimes carry. The grip is kind of big, and sticks out much, but since I carry open because I work in a pawnshop I really don't care. It is a great gun though and great accuracy. I hope you still buy one though, just remember its kind of heavy.

"We are fast approaching the stage of the ultimate inversion: the stage where the government is free to do anything it pleases, while the citizens may act only by permission; which is the stage of the darkest periods of human history, the stage of rule by brute force."

I carried my SS 92FS for about 2 years here in South Florida. It was carried under a loose t-shirt in a Milt Spark's Summer Special with a matching belt and spare mag pouch. I'm 5'10" and 165lb but it was not a problem but it does require a good holster and belt. Go for it.

Yugo, you might try carrying the 92 in a Thunderwear holster or an ankle holster. :D

Personally it's a little big for me as I'm 5'9" and weigh 145 lbs soaking wet. However, I've carried it before but in a SOB holster. That is where it is most easily concealable for me. Not good for driving though believe me and sitting can be somewhat difficult.

Of course if it is all you've got then make do. But if you've got some other choices I'd look at them. Like P226, P228, G19, G27 92Compact, USP compact, etc...

I use my Birgidier for CC in 9mm. I usually carry it in a Bianchi clip IWB with a thumbbreak. It is heavy, but I have gotten used to it. IComfort is very important when carrying, and I would suggest a good holster from a reputable maker. The trade off, and why I carry mine, is that when TSHTF, I will have a full size combat auto to defend myself or my family. Of course I don't slight others(carried a Glock 19,21,26 for years), I have made a committment to myself to be proficient with my Beretta, and that includes, for me, carrying it with me wherever I may go.
