Beretta 8045 or Sig P220

Well it's almost time for the biannual firearm purchase and for the last few months I've been pondering possibilities. I know I want a .45 caliber handgun. Why??? because I don't have one! Anyhoo, I've narrowed it down to these two. I've fondled both to a great extent and have even fired a few rounds with both. What is the general consensus of opinion on these pistols. Whatever I may choose will be used for general range practice, backyard plinking, occaisional carry, and overall "hey lookey at what I just got".

Thanks all,

Which ever floats your cork the best. They are both good guns.

I prefer the Sig 220, but that is me.

Over the Sig 220 I prefer the 1911 in a LW Commander for carry - but again - that is me.

Get one now and the other for your next biannual purchase.

I agree both are good guns, depends oa your taste. My last purchase was a Beretta 8045. A beautiful gun. Very accurate, eats everything, and a joy to shoot. On the other hand it has a slide mounted safety, that some people do not like. I think it is heavier than the 220. Capacity is 8 instead of 7.
I use it as my carry gun right now. I carry with the safety off, so it is no different than the SIG in this configuration. I really like it.
But which ever you choose, you will get a damn nice combat weapon.

I'd go with the Beretta, Very reliable gun.
I have an 8040 and the 8045. I use the 8040 for my carry piece

Hope this helps

i personally feel that berettas and glocks are the #1 most reliable guns. then in a close 2nd comes sigs.

thats not by much since they are all great guns.

its really up to you since they are both exellend guns. i don't really like the Cougar series however. i shot one in 9mm (8000) and it didn't feel good in my hand. it has a very large cutout in the top of the grip in the back (where a beavertail safety would go) and the front of the grip sticks out and is very rounded.

i don't like that feel but you might. its up to you. just get the one that feels better in your hands.

I have two SIG P220, one in blue and one in nickle. I can tell you both are tack drivers. They are also extremely comfortable to shoot. I also looked into the Beretta 8045. It appears to be a fine design. However, from many reviews I read, the 8045 appears to have a problem with accuracy and cannot achieve sub 2" groups at 25-yd regardless of ammos used. The Sig P220 on the other hand, can easily do 1.25" groups at 25-yd with good ammo.

You can try my totally scientific method for firearm purchase decisions.

1) Find a Quarter. (Try your pocket, or the couch

)

2) Flip the Quarter into the air. While the Quarter is in the air, call heads or tails. (No you can't call both.)

3) If it comes up heads, the Beretta wins; tails, the SIG wins. (The formula for this decision is: B comes before S; H comes before T. Refer to standard alphabet.)

4) You may opt for a best two out of three if you don't like the first flip.

The Sig P220 is one of the most if not the most accurate DBL action .45 ACP pistols in its stock condition.

I love Beretta the 92FS but in the case of the .45, it's the 220 hands down. Go try one on for size and see what you think.

I've been considering the purchase of a .45 semi-auto also. How does the H&K USP Tactical .45 compare to the Sig Sauer 220 in regards to accuracy, etc? Thanks!

I have a H&K full size .45 and a Sig P220 it would be a tough call. I like the trigger on the Sig a little bit better.

I just got back this afternoon from 90 minutes at the range with my new Cougar 8045. What a great feeling and shooting gun. The instinctive pointing of the gun is excellent--you can get good solid 10 yard hits just by practically waving the pistol at the target. It sits low in your hand and the trigger is crisp.

I tried a variety of ammos including Silvertip 185gr Winchesters, Hydroshock 185gr, Magtech 230FMJ, and Wincleans. All but the Wincleans offered excellent performance with the Silvertips producing the tightest groups. I have to admit, the groups weren't as tight as they were with the other gun I brought along (CZ75B 9mm), but the holes were certainly much bigger!

Not having owned a .45 before, I brought the 9mm along so I'd have something to compare the recoil of the Beretta to. The Cougar's recoil was only slightly greater than the CZ; I'd compare it to a .40cal Ruger P94 that I used to own.

In over 150 rounds with a brand spankin' new gun, there was not a single a jam or failure to fire. The Silvertip's grouped at a little over a couple inches at 10 yards, the Hydroshocks were about 3.5", and the Magtech's were about the same. The Wincleans were all over the place. I expect that my lack of experience with either the gun or the caliber probably account for the big group's and that they'll get much better in time.

I've never shot a 220 although I've shot various other Sigs in 9mm and 40 cal and know that they're wonderful guns; however, the Beretta's curved backstrap and instinctive point and shoot capability are better than any Sig I've shot.

My favorite test with any carry gun is to just pick it up off of the bench in front of me and squeeze off two rounds without aiming through the sights. The Beretta did as good or better than any gun I've ever shot; every shot found center torso on the silhouette and generally speaking they were pretty close together.

Big holes delivered center torso without taking time to do more than point and shoot--I believe that's all you can ask for in a carry gun. If that's what you're looking for, the 220 can't deliver much better performance than the gun I shot today...

Gremlin:

I'm glad you ignored me and got the Beretta and I am happy the new Beretta performed flawlessly. I will leave no doubt as to the fact that I am a strong supporter of Beretta.

Beretta is one of the few manufacturers who, to date, has refused to play ball with the marxists. Sig is working on this smartgun manure and let's don't even talk about Smith. Besides that, they offer the complete package: Pistols,Shotguns,Rifles, clothing and accesories.

Now you've spurned my interest in one of those "cats". Keep us informed and enjoy!

One of the reasons I bought an 8045, was because of Beretta's stance against the socialists. And that's probably the gun they'll take out of my cold dead fingers!

As of now, Beretta is actually dedicating several full-time employees to the sole goal of fighting those viciuos, frivolous socialist attacks and to promote that as a unified stance among all gun manufacturers.

As for the gun, I am of course partial to the Beretta, but I like the fact that it has a manual safety (as opposed to the Sig). I also think it is more durable and sturdily built, which counts a lot for a carry gun.

Besides, until all the lawsuits are settled, I'd rather go with a gun whose manufacturer is sure to be around a couple years from now, and if anybody, Beretta will be!

SIG_Sauer P220! I know no other pistol with the same accuracy out of the box, utter reliability and ease of operation. Good luck no matter which one you pick!

WILL BEARARMS: Your advice didn't go for naught. After shooting the Cougar in .45 and having so much fun, I put a downpayment on a Springfield 1911 loaded model, parkerized and pretty...

Gotta love thos big, slow bullets!

Sig 220. Have owned them. Recommend them. Thinner, and more comfortable in the hand than the Beretta, IMO. Barrel length is crucial in .45s for the highest velocity, to help with expansion. The Sig is 3/4ths"(?) longer, and its accuracy as highlighted above is not a lie. However, I would tell you to check out a Ruger P97 before you decide!
