Here in CA, the field models run around $820.00. A popular gunshop here has them on sale for $780.00 for dove season.
I would love to get one in 20ga, but just recently spent my money on two 870 expresses.

Well, I saw them offered by Beretta at the at the Grand American in Vandalia for FREE!
IF (and it's a big IF) you bought a Beretta 682E over/under.
This causes me to think Beretta is clearing out their current 391 stock possibly to introduce a 391E with their new Optima choke system. The newer Xtrema 3-1/2" autoloader is coming with the new chokes
If that's the case, the current 391s in the system may be offered at discounts similar to the older 682 Golds.

I'm actually thinking of getting one in 20-gauge for skeet and trap and the like.
The 12 was nice, but I don't bird hunt anymore, so I figure I don't need the extra kick.

Have you tried the 20 gauge? It's in the 5-1/2 pound range, much lighter than the 12 which runs over 7. When it comes to recoil, the 20 gauge might be just as stiff, if not worse, than the 12 gauge. I've found if recoil is the issue a full size 12 with a one ounce load is the best combination.
I have put my hands on a 20 gauge 391 but haven't fired one. My 6.5 over/under in 20 gauge recoils just as much as my 12s. That said, the 20 gauge 391 really appealed to me and would be my choice for a light upland gun if I decided to give up my sxs.

That's a good point, PJR. I didn't realize the difference in weight was that great.
Recoil really isn't an issue for me until I get into the third or fourth box of shells.
I fired 75 shells yesterday, 12 ga., 2 3/4", 1 1/8th ounce 8 shot, 3 dram equiv.
I could have gone another 25 or 50 shells, but I was starting to notice the recoil.
Today my shoulder is a little tender, but not really sore.
Last couple times out I rented a Browning Sporting Clays Gold, and even with the barrel porting the recoil from the Browning was worse with the same power shells.

When I was looking for a new SG last spring---they were $799 and $749 for the one or two of last years leftovers that were there.

I know you're asking about the 391 but I couldn't help to ask if you've tried a Benelli Montefeltro. Whenever I think 20 ga the Montefeltro is the only thing that pops in my head. It's an outstanding shotgun all around and to me it feels better than the 391. It's a little lighter and slimer. As you probably know, it's enertia operated instead of gas operated. You will pay a little more but IMO it's well worth it. BTW, I have nothing bad to say about the 391, I'm just in love with the Montefeltro. Give it a try before you commit yourself.

Mike, Your were doing great until you said you will 'wind up with a Remington'. If you are considering a 11-87, in 20ga, you may want to continue checking. I, like you, was thinking along the same paths. I did purchase a Remington 11-87 in 20ga. I did try the thing out with some field loads I had around. It worked nicely. First trip to range, and skeet, and light loads the gun did not cycle at all. In fact, on the THIRD shell the hull got stuck in the chamber and required a very sharp smack on the bolt lever to free it. The gun now is at the Remington factory cause they told me that all 20's should cycle all loads. The 12's however need a barrel change to work with the lighter loads. It's been 4 weeks now and all they will tell me is that they have the gun. I asked for recommendation thru TFL, and at ranges around here and the most popular gun, right now, seems to be the Beretta 391.

Mike...go with the 391. Get a 12 GA sporting clays model. They are the softest shooting gun you will find. You can use lighter loads with the beretta. forget about the Benelliand other inertia operated guns, they will beat you up.
I can't count the Sporting Clays shooters I know who have switched to the 390/391 because of recoil. If you shoot a lot it adds up and will make shooting a chore. Check out www.shotgunreport.com Lots of good linfo on the Beretta there. Bruce Buck (The Technoid) is a Beretta authority and he knows the guns.
The Remingtons had their day but the Beretta is superior.
