Beretta 21A .25 only last 1000 rounds?

Someone at the range today said that he was told from reliable sources that the Beretta 21A (Bobcat) in .25 will start to fall apart after 1000 rounds. I don't believe this. It can't be, can it? Why should any "quality" gun not work properly for 10's of thousands of rounds?
Thanks,
Mike

It is true with the Tomcat .32 ACP. I don't expect the Bobcat to have a longer life. Beretta makes quality compact and full sized guns, but the Beretta pocket pistols are POS in the durability department.

It's hard to imagine the life time of a "quality" gun to be only 1000 rounds. These guns are expensive(about $200 or more), not like a Jennings or Lorcin for $50. What about the Beretta Bobcat in .22LR, same problem? Also, how about the Colt.JR Pocket Pistol in 25acp or .22 short, are they durable?
Thanks,
Mike

I cannot say anything about the .25ACP, but my .22lr 21A is well over 5000 rounds old now and is my favorite "plinker." I have not had one single mechanical failure of any kind and I hardly even clean the poor thing. I imagine that the .25's pressure is harder on the metal than the .22, but I can't imagine it's that much.

I am also over 1800 rounds in my .32ACP Tomcat without the slightest complaint. Can't speak for everyone or every Pocket Beretta made, but I think they are indeed quality firearms for their size and price.

Who are these people always quoting "reliable sources" anyway?

JJR, with 5000 rounds through your 21A, do you notice any deterioration in the gun
Mike

Mike,

I read your question this morning but thought I'd wait until I got home and could take a good look at it before I replied.

After a through cleaning (it's first in about 6 months) I can say with certainty that I see no visible signs of deterioration other than the usual, slight, metal-on-metal wear that can be expected in a gun this used. I believe this "break in" wear has attributed to this gun becoming more and more reliable over time. I had a few stovepipe jams during the first 1000 rounds or so of it's life (lots of them during the first couple hundred), but it's since stopped and I cannot recall it failing me in the last few years.

I do have a gold plated Italian made 21A in .25acp but I have never fired it so I can't speak for it's reliability. I did compare the two (.22 & .25) side by side and I can't see anything significantly different inside to suggest that one would be more prone to self-destruct than the other. The .25 does have an extractor which the .22 does not have and that could have failure potential, but that's a cheap fix.

Hope this has been of some help,
John

Yes! Both the Beretta 21A Bobcat and 3032 Tomcat immediately disintegrate as soon as the built in counter detects the 1000th shot. The Beretta manuals both state: "This gun will self-destruct after 1000 rounds." :)

Neither of my Bobcats nor Tomcat have fallen apart after the 1000 round mark. The wear and fit of parts is still tight.

Well, my little Beretta is the Jetfire single action .25ACP. I chose the Jetfire over the model 21 because it is smaller. Like any other machine, longevity is related to maintenence. I've only had the Jetfire for a few months, but it has been perfectly reliable and shows no excessive wear. Time will tell, I guess.

I'm gonna have to disagree with QS and Mike as well. My Beretta Jetfire .25ACP has proven 100% reliable with close to 1000 rounds through it. In fact, it's the ONLY gun I own that I've NEVER had a problem with. Even my Ruger failed to extract aluminum cased ammo twice... but the Beretta likes it just fine.

As mentioned above, it has EVERYTHING to do with maintainance.

Ben,
I know that you think highly of Hornady XTP's. I can't find any ANYWHERE. I've called all the gun shops in Louisville. There's a gun show here tomorrow, I'll try and get there and look for the Hornady's.
However, I looked when the last gun show came here about six monthes ago, and there wasn't anything in .32ACP but Aguila.
