Benjamin Franklin Quote

I've been searching the archives for the last half an hour but have not been able to find the quote from Benjamin Franklin that in essence states that they have given us a republic if we can keep it.

Can anyone give me the exact quote?

Thanks!

The Constitutional Convention of 1787 was held in secret. The delegates' original charter was to modify the Articles of Confederation. Instead, the delegates chose to draft up an entirely different form of government.

When the delegates finally agreed on a final draft they were willing to forward to the states for ratification (nine of thirteen had to ratify), an onlooker outside the meeting hall supposedly asked Benjamin Franklin what kind of government had the delegates given them. Franklin is reported to have answered, "A republic, if you can keep it."
