What is a better shotgun for self-defense? Benelli M2 (semi-auto) Tactical or Remington 870Police Pump?

Yes. I have a Remington 1100, with 21" smooth bore barrel, and extended tube, for 8 shots. I like it just fine. Instead of fussing over, which gun is best, I suggest you get one you can afford, that fits you well, and that the recoil does not scare you off. Then practice, practice, practice ......

Many may be concerned with an auto for self defense. Don't be with the Benelli, it's the most relaible auto loader on the planet. I have two, the first one for almost 20 years and you wouldn't believe the garbage I put thru it just to see if I could make it fail. Not 1 single failure. I just picked up an M2 yesterday with the same expectations. If price is an issue you can't go wrong with an 870. Don't forget a Winchester Defender too. I have one of those in my closest for the wife and kids...................

or a mossberg 835 ;) i know alot of the remington boys will knock the 835, but for me its lighter more ergonomic for me and shoots 3 and a halfers if called upon. Also have put 700+ standard 12s thru it bout a box of 3's and a handfull of 3.5s. Been cocked, dry fired and rapid fired atleast another 400 times in its almost 3 year life span, not a problem with the gun. Alittle heavy on the trigger, moreso then most of any shotguns i have shot, so i took it apart and snipped a coil on the trigger retaining spring or w/e its called. Also snipped 1 coil on the hammer spring. Now has bout 2 pound lighter trigger then fathers identical 835.

Both are excellent shotties. My Benelli has performed flawlessly with just about any load I put thru it. If money isn't an issue, definitely go with the Benelli. You won't have to worry about remembering to pump between shots with the Benelli as well. In either case, they're reliable and proven shotties. You won't go wrong with either.

There's way more good defensive shotguns around than good defensive shotgunners. The hardware is not nearly as crucial as training, judgement and expertise.

Get any of the fine shotguns discussed here. Shoot the snot out of it. Voila!! Great defensive shotgun.

In regard to the original question, either.....

for the price I would go with Winchester defender or 870, sorry I am not a big fan of semi-auto when come to protecting my life.

Remington 870 pump. When you absolutely, positively, need to rely on one shotgun....accept no substitute.

Amen Speer.

The big problem with 870's is that they must be fully racked to avoid a horrific double feed jam, and they are not fun to rack prone.

The big advantages are a seemless slug transition, you can shoot one, load one, and they wil not wear out.

Get a Vang Comp barrel, and you wont stop laughing.

i've heard atleast 20 people or more drag benellis name through the mud time and time again. I think its MOSTLY remington boys that are just jealous, or think that their shotgun cant stand on its own merits, but a 870 can and will stand on its merits. Also my 835 will stand pretty well on its history haha, overall just like buying a handgun, opinions are like.... what does everybody have again?
