Benelli vs. Remington

Which is better, A Benelli M1 Entry 11225 or a Remington 11-87P 9845? How much is the price difference? Lookin' forward to the replies! :)

I do not own either but at the class I just attended the instructors said that the number one problem gun for them was the M1. I was surprised to hear that as I know they are not cheap. There was only one example at the class and sure enough it was the only SG that had problems. It would not cycle. It could have been ammo or poor maintenance. I don't know. I did find it interesting that the instructors mentioned this prior to knowing what guns we had brought and they were right on. The 1100, 500 and 870's worked flawlessly.
Now I do feel compelled to add that I have a friend who was with me at the class and he also has an M1 but it is an early model made by HK. It is my understanding that the later (current?) ones are actually made by Bennelli and these are/were having some teething problems. The one at the class was new.

Benelli made all of them. H&K was merely the importer for the M1 Super 90 for a number of years. Its more than likely that Beretta made part of the gun too. Beretta owns Benelli, Franchi, Sako, and a few others and many of them produce parts for models across the lines.

Are you an LEO, or willing to pay the $200 SBS fees? The Benelli Entry and the Remingon have 14" BBLs and are NFA firearms. I don't know how many Police forces allow privately owned short barreled shotguns to be used by their officers. Figure $750 for the Remington 11-87P and $800-1000 for the Benelli. Then add another $200 for the NFA tax stamp, plus shipping and NFA dealer fees. My prices are conservative estimates, you might be able to do better, but there is still the $200 tax on top of that.

If HK was just the importer, they sure took some liberties. My friend's M1 says HK right on the receiver. The new one at the class said Benelli.

The HK Benellis were Benellis. If you look at the FABARMS shotguns today, they'll have HK stamped also, IIRC. HK does not make the FABARMS shotguns, FABARMS does. When HK peddled (and sold in small quantities) the 512s, they were made by Franchi.

When Browning and Interarms imported SIGs, they had their names stamped on them. When FIE and EAA import(ed) Tanfaglios, they had their names on them. Etc.

Another potential cause for malfs in the M1s could have been light loads and/or loose grip/shouldering.

As said above, the M1's were made by Benelli and were marked HK when they were imported into the U.S. I was stationed in Germany and picked up a M3S90 while I was there. Since I bought it in Europe, it is only marked Benelli even though I bought it in 1992. So while it is marked Benelli like most post ban SG's you will find here in the U.S. it is still a preban shotgun.

Just an observation. Back a few years ago when I shot in our club's "Tactical Shotgun" matches, I saw more 1187s choke than Benellis. I have an M3S90 that has never choaked on field loads, buckshot or slugs. I even went for about 500 rounds when I first got it to see how dirty it would get before malfunctioning. I finally cleaned it because I was ashamed of how dirty it was.

New some serious competitors who shot the Soldier of Fortune 3 gun match through the 1980s and into the early 1990s. They used 1100s and 1187s and fooled and fussed around with them all the time, getting them reliable.

YMMV!

Two items that are simply from reading I've done and no practical experience:
1. 1100's seem to get better press than 1187's.
2. The Beretta 3xx series seem to always get rave reviews and are apparently quite affordable. I would consider one of these as an alloy receiver'd semi.
That's it.

Let me further muddy the waters.

My semi-auto SG experience is limited to Benellis. Never a problem with my M1, even with low recoil loads. I have two other friends who own M1s and they don't have any problems either.

In the IPSC 3 gun competitions I've attended, I've mostly seen Remington 1100 shotguns malfunction. One gun was almost totally stock -- I have no idea why it hung up but it did.
