Benelli M1 Super 90 OK for Sporting Clays?

DDS

I was just invited to shoot sporting clays for the first time. I presently only own a Benelli M1 super 90 with ghost sights. It is my home defensive shotgun which is shot 4-5 times a year. Years ago I bought an accessory barrel (26" select with 5 screw in chokes). I bought it on sale just in case I ever "got in to "shotgun shooting. Would this shotgun be OK to use with the accessory barrel ? If so, which choke should I use? I was told that most people are taught to shoot with both eyes open and to point the shotgun. If this is the case, would the Benelli still be OK to use with the receiver mounted ghost sight? I don't think it is easily removed. If this set up will make me look foolish I can always borrow my friends Remington 1100. I prefer to use the Benelli since I am very familiar with its operation and it is very light and fast.
I am a die hard experienced pistol shooter and have very little knowledge about shotguns. Any feedback would be most appreciated.

PS What would be an appropriate load to use?

Thanks so much! Dave

The Benelli with the "Accessory" barrel and choke tubes will do just fine. If you can see the clays with the ghost ring sights than fine, if not borrow the 1100.

Don't worry about looking foolish. I think guys running around in sandals, shorts and shooting vests look pretty stupid. They are the diehards, ignore them.

I would buy 2 3/4 shells in shot size #8. If you are going to shoot 100 birds bring 5 boxes (125 shells) with you.

As to choke selection, start with IC. Unless you get verry long birds it should be able to handle anything you come across.

ps If you see everyone else frantically changing chokes at a particular station, ask them why.

As you are a new shooter the other shooters, if they are gentlemen, will be happy to help you with choke selection and with tips on particular shots and range etiquitte.

Watch dem rabbits, they bounce:D

As with many other things, I'm with Geoff. Unless the GR sights make it impossible, use the accessory bbl and have fun.

I'm certainly no local legend at SC, but I get some birds with a Skeet choke, and a Modified handles the rest.

An oz of 8s is a good all round load for SC. I'd use 7 1/2s for wascally wabbit targets.

HTH and enjoy...

Thanks guys for the feedback. I will give the Benelli a try and let you know how it turns out. Dave
