Benelli M1 Super 90: Does it shoot the lighter loads?

FL members I need your help and valuable info.

I would like to buy a Benelli M1 Super 90. It is primarily to be used for clay shooting, but I want it also for hunting and home defense.
Do you know if it cycles well the lighter loads (24 and 28 grams) ?
My other options would probably be the Benelli Centro and the Franchi 612 VS. I know that the Franchi cycles light loads without problems, but I would like to go for the M1 Super 90. Please note that I do not want a dedicated clay shooter.

Mine cycles anything that will fit.

I have shot several rounds of clays with #7 light target loads of various brands.

I hear of problems on the 'net, but I don't KNOW of anyone having such problems.

I do know that Bs are sensitive to gadgets hanging off of them, lights, sidesaddles especially.

Mine has a light on it, but it has not affected function with any load.
 
Mine has always been 100% reliable with light loads. This topic has been covered many times in the past so you might want to do a search. The key thing when shooting light loads with a Benelli is to make sure the internal mechanisms are lightly lubricated.

Conventional wisdom says gas guns like the Beretta 391 or Rem 11/87 are better suited for Clays because of their recoil tempering characteristics, and Benellis are better suited for hunting because of their lighter weight and simplicity. For home defense I don't think one design is better than the other, but there are far more "ninja toys" available for Benellis. -- Kernel
 
Mine has been 100% reliable with birdshot and reduced recoil slugs and buckshot. It even has a Surefire Responder on it and it still works like a charm.

Gents,

I have a brand new M1S90 and it is worthless with light loads. Basically, it is a pump when you shoot birdshot. However, it is totally reliable, so far, with 3 inch 00 Buck. I haven't tried anything else.

Most I have seen will shoot anything 1 1/8 oz 3 dram and up, anytime anywhere. I have yet to see one shoot 7/8 oz loads at any speed. Some will shoot the 1 oz 3 dram and some won't. All have cycled the 1oz hotrod loads fine too. One thing that helps to get it working with light loads is to shoot the pi$$ out of it, the more you shoot it the more it will loosen up and cycle freely. Nice shotgun if you get it.

What is the difference between the M1S90 and the M1 Field (apart from the magazine) ?

I've shot cases of light 7/8 oz loads in my 12ga M1 Field with no problems at all. The key to making a Benelli function with light loads is lubing the internal mechanisms. All it takes is a light coating of grease on the Locking Head Pin, the Locking Head Channel, and the lugs on the Locking Head itself. While your at it grease the receiver channels that the bolt body rides in.

Use a quality gun grease (not oil). I like Shooter's Choice mainly because of the handy syringe applicator. Any all-weather synthetic grease should work. I lube every 400 to 500 rds or when I do a normal detail clean, which ever comes first.

The other key thing to lube is the recoil spring in the butt stock, mostly because it's prone to rusting if it gets wet. For the recoil spring I use CLP.

I've always lubed my Benellis this way and never had a cycling problem. Others have posted that once they started to grease the Locking Head assembly their cycling problems with light loads went away. -- Kernel
