Benelli B-76 9mm...

... anybody heard of it before?

We all know Benelli for their shotguns. But this afternoon, I saw a Benelli 9mm pistol! $295.00, excellent, in the box, at the Dallas Gun Show. I wasn't there to buy guns, but to buy Makarov ammo and to look at holsters and gun belts, so I didn't buy it.

Did I blow it? Benelli quality is well known. Did it carry over into their 9mm offering? I'm a sucker for the unusual, so based on your comments, I may go back tomorrow and get it if it gets decent reviews. Talk to me.

Very good price for a very good gun.

It has a rather severe feed angle (fairly Luger like), due to its grip ergonomics, so you'll have to play around and find the best ammo for it if you decide to carry it for self-defense.

The B76 is an unusual gun, but innovative, well designed, and well made. Mine was reliable and fun to shoot. It really threw the brass, but I don't reload, so this didn't bother me. After I got into SIGs and Glocks, I didn't fire my B76 for several years, and ended up trading it away. Later, of course, I wished I still had it.

Excellent gun. Mine has been very reliable with several kinds of ammo, and accurate. Like other Benelli guns, it is "different", using a fixed barrel and a short unlocked slide movement to initiate the unlocking. This is a bit like the old Remington Model 51, but more refined. From a collector viewpoint, I would buy it at any reasonable price. For a shooter, it would be as good as most and better than many. One drawback is a single column magazine.

B76

I owned one years ago. It was a very nice pistol which had two practical problems which later caused me to sell it.

1. There is no hammer drop on it, meaning that you have to ease the hammer to the safety DA position by hanging onto the hammer and easing down while pulling back on the trigger. Gave me the willies every time I did it.

2. Mine did not feed hollowpoints. They would nosedive in the mag or fail to feed. I think this was related to the overall cartridge length.

Those drawbacks aside, the B76 was a well-built pistol and very accurate. I liked mine, but because of the little problems cited above, it was not practical for use in personal defense and I passed it along.

Well, I bought it...

Yup, based on the comments I received, I got the Benelli B76 at the gun show this afternoon. $275.00. Took it to the range straight from the show and fired it. Nice pistola! My bud, the rangemaster, had not only never seen one, he'd never heard of one! Got a kick, though, when he shot it.

Crazy thing ejects straight in the air! But, it's a nice shooter. Aims nice. Very comfortable to grip. Decent accuracy out of the box. And, as I said, I'm not gonna see a 1/2 dozen just like it at the range. I like it! It's a keeper.
