Benefits of using a suppressed handgun for HD. (video)

Neat video. Kinda underscores the truth that they are not "silencers", more like mufflers. :D I still don't understand why so many jurisdictions insist on making people ruin their hearing.

I shoot my 10/22 + Spectre with subsonic ammo out the window sometimes. I would equate it to sounding like a cap gun in the house.

I fired my 226 + Trident9 in the house once and found it painful to the ears.

Because its the law. Because its BEEN the law for longer than most of us have been alive. Because tv and movies only show bad guys using them for silent killing. Because they think that if they allow silencers we will have a wave of murder sweep the nation since we can now shoot people without the neighbors hearing the shot (forgetting all about how noisey knives, ropes, hammers, golf clubs, baseball bats, rocks, 2x4s, bare HANDS, etc..are)

I have heard that there are places (in parts of Europe) that actually require suppressors for hunting.

The real world issue is that if "silencers" were common and easily available, then they would be criminally misused. And since many shootings are reported to police only because someone heard the shots, that more crimes would go undetected, or go longer before detection.

And, on balance, the authorities seem to feel that the risk to our hearing (for which we can wear protection) is less than the general risk to public safety if "silencers" were common.

That's why they " insist on making people ruin their hearing."
Personally, I disagree, but that's just me.

One thing about using a "silenced" pistol, or any NFA weapon for self defense, it won't go over well with most juries. ITs an image thing, and sadly juries are not always made up of people who look beyond surface images.

I have actually considered a spear for home defense but they are rather awkward for CC. :) Given the silly regulations I suppose that active muffs are the most practical answer for HD but for CC I guess there really are no good answers as just about anything that is effective will damage your hearing if you ever have to use it.

I had an opportunity some years ago to shoot a Ruger .22 with the integral suppressor. It was quite. The gun's mechanics was louder than the rounds being fired. Pretty impressive.

In the 1980's, suppressors were required at target matches in Denmark. The whole idea was that their use was courteous. It's only in the US (and possibly the UK) that suppressors have been given a (fraudulent and undeserved) reputation for sinister shenanigans.

I could go off on a rant that the whole thing was a boondoggle created by FDR to generate funds for the New Deal in the face of a contrary Supreme Court, but that's another story.

I've always thought that a suppressed pistol (or a 10" rifle in .300 AAC) would be a marvelous home defense weapon. I figure if something's woken me up with the sense of urgency to grab a firearm and use it in the dark, then I'm best off not fighting muzzle flash and excessive report.
