benefits, drawbacks, of lands and grooves

I've read that Ruger's new trapgun has 6 straight lands and grooves to keep the wad from rotating thereby improving pattern. Hastings now offer aftermarket barrels with the same sort of setup. Is it really worth it? Does it have to be done on an overbored barrel? Does it affect pressure? Works with any wad? I've bought a new 11-87 and had trigger work done on it, forcing cone lengthen, ported. Should I add this to the gun? Thanks.

The more important questions are:

1. have you shot 4 cases of ammo in this gun yet?

2. do you shoot at least once a week and at least a case per month?

3. do you miss targets becuase of the gun or poor shooting habits?

I have no idea how much experiance you have but practice goes a lot futher towards busting targets and putting food on the tabel than gimmicks do. If you want to try this out with out spending a ton of money, they make straight rifle extended choke tubes. Get one of these and see if it makes any differance.

IMO, you should shoot that 11-87 a year or so before doing much else to it. A few flats of ammo are what's needed, not gadgets and gizmos.

Custom bbl work(Past the forcing cone work) is what one does when hitting 199/200 is unacceptable.
