Belt Bags?

I want to see if anyone has +/- experience with this sort of "holster." It's obviously not something I'd use for EDC, but I have a couple of specific times it looks like it could be the best way to carry - backpacking, and riding a bike with a backpack/camelbak on. Specifically, I'm thinking attached to the belt on a pack or camelbak.

Any thoughts?

A waist-pack (aka fannypack) is a reasonable carry option depending on your clothing, location and activity. I live in the tropics where the waist-pack is worn by many of the tourists and locals so it is not out of place. I have bought waist-packs from several manufacturers and like the AE pistol-packs best. They are sold through www.theconcealmentshop.com out of Texas. They come in different sizes, either nylon or leather, and are available in different colors. I like the nylon ones, small to medium in size, and colored in one of the darker blues or grays. I hang my beeper from one of the pockets and use it to carry my ID, phone, money, pistol and ammo. I can carry a variety of pistols in the small to medium sizes, ranging from a Sig-239 all the way up to a full-size Springfield 1911. I carry in the waist-pack about 70% of the time, the rest in an IWB holster.
I also used the waist-pack when back in the States and there are some locations where it did not fit in with the local population's mode of dress. The nylon packs do not make people think there's a gun inside as much as the leather ones. I have never been questioned about my pack by any security or police I have encountered in the years I have used it.
To summarize- go for it. It's a good option for carry.

Thanks for the response. I've seen some nice waist bags, but the reason I'm specifically considering the on-belt kind is to use it on a pack or camelbak.

My thought is, then it would look like an extra pouch, and some of them even have a divided pocket so you can put other stuff in it for "cover." So for hiking, you could put a compass, pocketknife, etc. in the front, and keep your CC piece discreet until you need it.

For ordinary carry, I'd likely just go pocket or IWB. (I'm specifically thinking about a S&W airweight here)

Some people berate these bags as "Shoot me first" bags.
If you pick black as your color and have the typical shaped holster bag, then yes it will stand out.

Get a bag with a different color, as you mentioned hang your pager from it or a cell phone. Sew on a sports patch...

Non-Gun butt packs or shoulder bags made by companies like L.L. Bean or Cabelas are often adaptable as discreet "Carry" bags and come with that companies logo prominently printed on the item as well as looking subtly different.

Use discretion. If you live in a low crime area, just think of it as a discreet convenient way to carry.

If you frequent the seedier sections of town, then a more secure less obvious manner of carry would be advised.
 
I have used the belt pack carry by Bagmaster for a number of years now and I think that it is an excellent product. In addition, I added some large split rings to the belt loops and an over the shoulder strap to those (see pic)

and also use that for another carry mode. Works well for me.
 
scholling - that looks interesting...but odd placement. It looks like the compartment is basically at the small of your back, facing away? Seems like an awkward draw? I'd have to see one in person, I guess.

Interesting find though.
 
The darn things are hard to find, much less find to inspect. That's why I haven't bought one. That and they almost never show up anyplace on sale and I'm cheap. There aren't many things that IMO are good candidates for group buys but this is one that would make a great group buy. I'd be in for one.
