Beginner's optics for a Savage 10FP ?

Need help selecting a rifle and spotting scope. Affordable is the key word here. This will be my first scoped rifle and I want to keep everything basic. I'll be shooting at 100-300 yards.

Good luck getting both a decent scope and spotting scope for under that price. Go to Walmart for those prices.

I have $100 worth of Simmons 44Mag on my pet '06, since 1997. It's travelled around a good many miles of jeep trail in my 4WD truck; it has held its zero quite nicely. Maybe 200 or so rounds fired since I put it on.

It works well enough from 100 yards on out to 500 yards...

I use an el cheapo K-Mart/Wal-Mart spotting scope, 20X60 power. Not much good above 40X, but so what? I suggest a quality tripod, though--you can upgrade the spotting scope in a few years if you really think you need to.

Take a trip over to www.bearbasin.com
Check out their closeout on Bausch & Lomb 3000 Elite Series in 3X9X40 for $139. These are outstanding scopes for the money. I picked one up and hope to grab a second if the finances permit. (OK,OK so I'm going to pick up another anyway) These scopes come with a lifetime warranty and a money back in one year return policy. Tough to beat.
As to a spotting scope, I've seen and used some in the $80 to $100 range from Simmons and Tasco. They work but are not that great. The biggest complaint was constantly having to remove my glasses because of the eye relief being on the non-existant side.
Beats hoofin' 200 yards after every group. Decent used Burris or B&L may be another option.
Take Care

I have a 6.5x20x44Simmons .44 Mag with target turrets on Ebay right now (atlanta_cracker). I set a reserve of $100. I didnt like it as much as a Tasco 3x9x40 World Class which my 30-06 currently sports. With the Tasco i am getting 1" groups at 100 yards. I have a Savage "Package Deal" 30-06 sold at Wal-Mart,etc. for $362 including a scope. Its a good setup for deer hunting.

Is 3X9X40 enough scope for precision shooting at 100 to 300 yards ? I'll take it out further as I get comfortable with the gun and learn how to reload.

That B&L 3000 seems like a sweet deal but I'm not certain if it's appropriate. If 3X9 is what I should be starting out with please let me know. The post on "cheap scopes" has me thinking about the Tasco 6-24X42 varmint scope.

Dunno as I'd use a 3x9x40 for chipmunks at 500 yards, but for most any rational purpose it'll do just fine.

Define precision.

The 2x7 on my .243 allows me to shoot 3/8" groups at 100 yards--assuming I do my part--which is precise enough to suit me.

You have enough stuff to learn that worrying about extreme precision is the least of your worries. At this stage of your learning curve, anything inside 1" or 1-1/2" is okay.

Don't be in a hurry.

scope power

during WWII, russian and german snipers were using 4x scope(and they shot 3-400 enemies with it), and current russian sniper use 6x scope(US use 10x though), so I guess your question for 3-9x scope, i would say "more than enough"

Another combination

I have B&L's (mine are the little higher grade 4000 series) and they're excellent. At $139 that would be one of my personal choices.

I've seen Burris spotting scopes at some of the cut-rate places (Midway, Cheaper Than Dirt, Sportsman's Guide) for $140 range IIRC. I've never used one, but my Burris scope is very good and I would assume their spotters are the same. I have looked thru them at shows and they looked clear.

My local dealer will pull scopes off used rifles in his rack. Something like a Leo has a lifetime warranty so you probably won't go too far wrong. I get them for less than 1/2 price (of their selling price, not list price). Most guys that buy guns consider the scope a freebie and the dealer doesn't get much extra for the package. He makes more by parting them out.
