Is this it?

At LGS...new DPMS 308 heavy barrel A2 sights and stock with removable carry handle (does that make it A3 sights?)

This gets me a major caliber, accurate, mag fed rifle capable of shooting long distance and for hunting about anything (not hunting at long distance). It should be reasonably accurate to 300m without a scope and up to say 600m with a scope.

Downsides? Heavy. AR10/15 platform is dirty (but I wont be shooting hundreds of rounds at a time)

Your input? Are these usually chrome lined or does it not matter if shooting good ammo?

The DPMS LR-308 is the entry level for the .308 AR platform. They keep cost down by taking a few short cuts. The ones I have shot at the local range are good shooters but lack the refinements of the higher cost .308 platforms.

Take a look at the new CMMG .308 AR platform rifle. These have very nice options, Magpul PRS, black stainless 18" barrel, two stage trigger. I haven't shot one but they look really nice on paper and have the DPMS price point. This would be my choice for a entry grade rifle in this platform.

The DPMS .308s are very good rifles for the money. All the features that mdcratebuilder brought up can be had in the DPMS as well. I have had very good luck with my .308s accuracy and reliability. Unlike an AR15 the AR10/SR25 platforms DO NOT have a set standard and there can be huge variances. There really is no in between with AR10/SR25 when it comes to entry level and top tier. You are either at $1500 and under to $3000 and up. I have several shooting friends with SR25s and they are beautiful weapons that are of much great quality than my DPMS AP4 in .308, however... mine goes bang everytime you pull the trigger and is extremely accurate. If I were to do it all over again I would still buy the DPMS and spend the rest on ammunition.

Jeepman has a good point. While I tend to like refinement myself, it does not always mean more reliable or more accurate. However, it does mean more money.

keep in mind, also that you can build your DPMS AR10 for almost $300 less than buying it already put together!
