Bedside Gun

Besides my G17 holstered nearby which would be the better addition? AR15 16" or 12 gauge Turkey gun with 24 inch barrel and fiber optic sights? I am thinking the Turkey gun with 00 buck.

My choice is a standard E2 configured AR, . . . 30 rd mag, . . .

Reason: my .223's go out 1 at a time, . . . whereas your 00 buck goes out in clusters. I can slightly move the impact zone for my .223, . . . where ever you pulled the trigger on the load, . . . that is where they land.

Inside a house, . . . you will not get effective 12 gauge expansion of the load until you get down to a 10 or 12 inch barrel (very much illegal by the way) but the AR gives you the ability to "spread the wealth" so to speak.

There will always be the "knockdown power" argument to counter my reasoning, but if you don't hit em, . . . knockdown power is a moot commodity. Additionally, . . . reloading a shotgun is a time consuming, action rich adventure in a high adrenaline event, . . . reloading an AR is a piece of cake, . . . push the button, . . . I've got 30 more.

AND, . . . if I really wanted to go "HI TECH", . . . I saw I believe 60 round mags that are almost the same size as 30's, just fatter in the bottom, . . . if you cannot stop a BG with 30 or 60 rds of .223, . . . a 12 gauge certainly will not be any better.

Just old codger thoughts, . . . mostly influenced by the dead bodies of our MP's on the streets of Saigon, Hue, and other places, . . . when the powers that were then forced them to use shotguns instead of rifles. It took a number of bodies, . . . but they finally listened, . . . gave the shotguns to the infantry who could use em.

May God bless,
Dwight

take that shotgun and load it with some 00 buck

The AR platform was not designed for extremely close quarters (less than 25 feet) - the shotgun was.

Defiantly? As in contumacious? :D

Anyhoo, for me definitely the AR. For all the reasons already stated. ...spread the wealth, LOL!

I do have a shotgun but have reasoned the AR to be better to fill that niche.

Short barreled AR

None of the above. Why the heck all the concern over a second HD gun. Learn to use your primary and dance with who brung ya. Joe Q home owner, "Please Mr. bad guy, can you hold on a second while I figure out what to shoot ya with? Please?"

Sure it's nice to think you can fight your way to a real gun but in reality by the time you do that the fight is over, win or lose. You ain't in 1870 fighting Apaches.

how's about a Winchester 1300 Defender, 7+1 loaded from slugs to 00 or what ever you have handy.

Just my .02

I would NOT want to shoot an AR-15, especially one with a short barrel and compensator indoors. Kiss your hearing good-bye..

Besides a shotgun loaded with reduced recoil buckshot, a .45 ACP loaded with 230gr JHP is my next choice. It's subsonic, not burning a lot of powder (more powder, more boom), and offers good protection for most things that go bump at 3AM.

Have any of you with the AR's shot them inside yet?

I'll stick with my 9MM CZ-75B, or Browning Hi Power.

Depends on where you live and a lot of other things. Unless you have a lot of land where you need to shoot at someone who is some distance away, I would say shotgun.

On the flip side if you live some place with say bear, where a bear could break into your house I would say get an AR and keep one of those .50 Beowulf uppers handy.

PS: better have some hearing protection hanging up if you go the AR-Route unless you like hearing loss.

I live in a condo so my bedside gun rotates between a CZ75, P229 and my new 1911PD.

I was considering purchasing a Remington 870 but already have the P220.....wife has a P229. I'm also questioning why I want a second gun (any type), where I would keep it, etc. I know the 870 12ga with a 00 would cause greater trauma than a single round from a handgun, assuming it's not a instant kill shot, but logistics of multiple weapons does not seem feasible.

I read all the posts here so I know there are a few who seem to agree.....right?

Shorter barrel shotgun for HD is best I think.

My Mossberg 500 came with a longer barrel for hunting and clays or what not and it also came with a shorter 18.5" barrel for HD uses.

Works great.
