My bedside companion is a Glock 30, .45acp. I opt for that particular pistol versus my custom built 1911's due to the simplicity of operation in what might be a very high-stress set of circumstances should an intruder appear. My question deals with laser and tactical lighting systems. I've investigated the M6 Tactical Laser Illuminator by Insight Technology Inc....this incorporates both the laser and high intensity light into a package that installs under the frame on Glocks.

The second option is the LaserMax internal laser sight that replaces the guide rod on autopistols. Of course, this system doesn't incorporate the high intensity lighting.

Has anyone had any experience with either of these?

I don't like lights on guns. Want to identify target before pointing muzzle at it. Don't want to point muzzle at somebody who isn't a target, just out of place.

Blonde, 38C, 5'7"...

Oh wait, you mean a gun?

HK USP .45, with the light attached.

Better to have the light and not need it, then need it and not have it.

I bought one of the early LaserMax a few years back and it was very fancy but a piece of crap! It was the model for the G17.

The thingy had a plastic cup for the laser batteries and that got all crushed after a few rounds of regular factory ammo. I called them and they wanted me to ship the part and $25 for a replacement. No way.

The switch also used to turn on the laser too easily so the batteries were flat in no time.

Big dissapointment, neat idea though.

Just make sure BG doesn't zero in on YOU when he sees your gun light (i.e., homing beacon, lighthouse, here-I-am-come-and-get-me-I'm-the-target gizmo, etc.).

Laser---a bad idea for nocturnal home defense.

What I have thought about doing is ..holding a very bright light in my left hand with my arm straight out from my body and to the front....so its about 3ft to my left and doesnt shadow me...gun in my right hand.....if he shoots at the light, I have a better chance of avoiding the hit and shooting him instead.....just a theory..

Shoot well

I have a lasermax on my G30 and it is my nightstand gun. The laser works just fine and I have never had a flat battery nor had it go on when I did not want it to. No problem with crushed battery cup either.

The laser pulsates to make it easy to find and I would rely on it due to problems with my vision at arms length.

I keep a mini mag next to the G30 if I need a light. I also have lamps in various areas throughout the house on remote so I can turn them on from the bedroom. Anyone coming to my house will trip sensors outside and light the area up, any noises inside get lit up by the remote.

I don't want a light attached to my pistol either, for reasons stated above, but I do keep two flashlights next to the bed; one is a large 3-cell Maglite, the other a Photon. Photon is for quick orientation and then off once gun is in hand etc. Maglite more for power outage or other type of "non-tactical" problem. I can find my gun in the dark, no problem, right on the nightstand.

Besides a good looking blonde that stands 5'11" and weighs 127,

a Sig-Sauer P220A in .45ACP.:) :D  LOL

A 120lb german shepard, followed by infinite slugs and 00 buck shot out of the street howitzer. If they survive that, they can have whatever they want!;)

Here's mine...

I'd suggest letting your eyes get fully adjusted to darkness and then have someone (unsuspectedly) shine a Surefire into them. See if you can aim and trigger the airsoft/cap gun/simunition in your hand before they can shoot the airsoft/cap gun/simunition that their flashlight is mounted to.

Force-on-force encounters like this usually change people's tune re: weapon mounted lights real darn fast. ;)

Take this from somebody who knows...because I HAVE been there and HAVE done that. I have cleared a lot of homes and buildings over the past decade. Lasers are useless...flashlights are required. One thing I have found is that I prefer a handgun over a long gun. I also prefer a handgun that I can control with one hand. If the recoil is so excessive that I can't hit with one hand, it is useless to me. I need my other hand for opening doors and holding my light. Weapon mounted lights are a plus. Communication is number one. You need your other hand to call 911. If this is your home...you may need your other hand to carry your children to safety. If it gets bad, you may need your other hand to apply direct pressure to a wound. Fancy shotguns and MP5s are great...but give me a .45 ACP pistol any time for clearing a building. Now if I am doing it as a team...I would definitely like some, but not all, of my team members to have long guns.

My nightstand heater is a CZ-75D PCR. I just picked up a Surefire E2 last weekend to complete the package. I got the E2 for $60! :)

Just to add, it will temporarily impair your vision as well. Your eyes are not adjusted to the light either, but it will be severe for the BG and affect you for only a second or two. It's different for entry teams (fully awake and ready) than it is for a person waking up in the middle of the night to noise. Either way, it's still a far cry from the homing beacon, lighthouse, etc. describing a weapon light.

BTW, I like the G23C. If you ever want to get rid of it, you can send it to me.;)

For those who mentioned LaserMax, I suggest you avoid them for two reasons:

1. You have to turn them on. In a high-stress situation, especially a home invasion like the topic of this thread, it will be awkward and time-consuming to find the switch. I know, I know...."I can turn my LaserMax on in a split second....." No, you can't. It renders LaserMax lasers completely useless in the type of situation described in this thread.

2. As someone above stated, you can't zero a LaserMax. Beyond dumb luck, it will not be accurate at any distance. If you're using it to acquire a target more than 20 feet away, you're risking your life.

If you must use a laser (I have nothing against lasers that make sense), use a Crimson Trace Laser instead. It can be zeroed easily and comes on when you grip the gun (you don't have to think about it or do anything extra). In a home-invasion that wakes you, when fractions of a second will make all the difference, you could be talking about the difference between living and dying.
