Given the insane gun laws in the U.K., it is astonishing that the gun was not immediately seized and destroyed by the police.

So someone "had no idea why it took 66 years" to return the pistol. Perhaps the person in question was blind?

Having saved the pistol from destruction, seems to me he earned the right to admire it for a while. When his conscience told him that it was more than enough time, he precipitated the return. Since museum time is measured in centuries, it's not a particularly outrageous holding period.

Good thing the daughter went to the Italian embassy. The Brits would have scrapped it, the pathetic SOBs.
