Grizzly attacks teen bicycle racer in Bicentennial Park

A teenage girl riding in an all-night bicycle race suffered severe injuries early this morning when a bear attacked her on a trail in Far North Bicentennial Park, authorities said. Police officers with shotguns escorted medics into dark woods to retrieve the girl, who was to undergo surgery at Providence Alaska Medical Center. The hospital reported she was still in surgery at 6:30 a.m. As of 11 a.m., no other information was available from the hosital.

"She was cut up and bit pretty good," said Anchorage Police Officer Jean Mills.

Police declined to identify the victim.

Rick Sinnott, a wildlife biologist with the state Department of Fish and Game, went to the scene and said it could have been the same grizzly sow that charged two runners about two weeks ago on a nearby trail.

Police were called at 1:35 a.m. after another bicyclist found the mauled girl down and dazed on the ground.

She was among about 60 participants in a 24-hour race sponsored by the Arctic Bicycle Club. The team event began at noon Saturday and was to end at noon today. Organizers canceled it after the attack and were trying to account for all the other riders.

The girl had just come off the Gasline Trail north of Hilltop ski area and was entering the Rover's Run Trail, which goes along the south fork of Campbell Creek, when the bear attacked, Sinnott said.

Most likely the grizzly, which has a pair of cubs, was fishing for salmon in the creek and might not have heard the cyclist coming due to stream noise and strong winds roaring through the forest, he said.

Warning signs are posted in the area, although the city has not officially closed the trails to use.

It's definitely not unheard of, Sinnott said, for a bear to charge someone moving by on a bicycle. In fact, the motion combined with surprise could trigger what was an "unintentionally provoked" attack, he said.

After the mauling, the girl used her cell phone to call 911 but was unable to communicate, Sinnott said.

Another rider who came along found her sitting on the ground and said she could utter only one word: "Bear."

He then used her phone to make another call for help.

Sinnott said he didn't arrive in time to see the victim before she was taken to the hospital, but he learned from emergency responders that the girl suffered multiple injuries.

The bear bit her on the head, torso and thigh, Sinnott said. She also had a "sucking chest wound" caused by a puncture to the lung cavity.

It was close to 3 a.m. when Sinnott and two police officers emerged from the spooky near-solstice night to the South Bivouac Trailhead parking lot on Campbell Airstrip Road. Sinnott carried a 12-gauge shotgun.

The bear was nowhere to be seen, but the woods are dangerous, he said. He set about tacking up signs to warn people.

Mills, the police officer, opened a bag containing the injured girl's bicycle helmet, which the bear had chewed up.

It was lucky she had the helmet on, as the bear attempted to chomp her head, Sinnott said.

He questioned the wisdom of bicyclists riding all night through bear territory.

"A midnight race along a salmon stream is probably a pretty bad idea when the salmon are there," Sinnott said.

Holy Crap.

Being mauled/bitten by an animal is definitely not the way I would choose to go given a choice. I don't swim in the ocean, I don't venture into bear territory unarmed. Biggest animal I've ever tangled-a$$ with was a Great Dane and that was big enough, thanks.

Prayers to the girl and her family.........

You be careful up there Wild, and I bet you got something better than a 44 for bear. :)

That is one animal I won't take lightly---if I am in brown bear country, I am armed with a fairly heavy caliber in a dependable rifle.
I got a small glimpse of what they are capable of some years ago---If I can't carry the appropriate rifle in brown country, I'll stay home or go somewheres else.

Mr. Sinnott wins the No S*** award for that statement

Poor kid....Lets us know if they update her condition WIld......

That area in town is a very beary place. I've fly fishied for small dolly varden and rainbows that were feeding on salmon eggs in that creek. The shoreline of the small stream was always matted down from bears traveling the banks.

I've seen an all night bike race at Kincaid Park, a much less beary place near the airport. I happened to be there early one morning during the race. the bike riders were very spread out and could come around a corner quite quietly. I could see how a rider could come upon a bear quickly on a noisy stream.

I hope she pulls through.

Bear seem to have more right than

citizens with ADF&G these days. There have been a number of Bear issues over here this spring on Kodiak. The are estimating ten Bears are around the city and the area outside the city. A lot of cabins and camp trailers have been intruded by the big fellas.

Three nights ago there was one just behind my house. I did not see him but the neighbor called about it heading towards my back porch. I don't really mind them being around here but I am concerned one is going to get to frisky with one of the kids. These bears have been spending more time around here these last couple of years. Kids just don't realise what danger they could be facing is they mess around with mama and her cubs.

ADF&Gs position is always the same. Don't mess with the bears. They'll deal with it. Meanwhile the sucker is trashing the neighbors houses. Me I'll opt for the 444 Marlin as an alternative to protect my house and family.

What moron thought up this race?

Next is going to be an iron man competition in with the swimming off the Pac coast of N.CA. right past a colony of sea lions.

Hope the girl recovers.

I don't know how this pertains to the cyclist being attacked. The attack occurred in Bicentennial Park that was established for the very purpose of preserving wildlife habitat in a pristine condition such that wildlife can be enjoy by people...and established for the recreational use of the park by humans, ostensibly in harmony with wildlife.

I'm with Musketeer on this one,"what idiot thought up that race" is a question I would ask for sure.
Riding a bike through an area were bears are KNOWN to be at the time of the race, fishing for food AND with cubs--JEEZ-- why not just hang a sign around your neck saying "BEAR ATTACK WAITING TO HAPPEN".
Really, does anybody wonder why some people get attacked, mauled or killed??
These are WILD animals---they will always be WILD animals---they don't think like we do and no matter our good intentions, brown bears will never be like your pookie wookie lap dog---they will ALWAYS be unpredictable, aggressive, defensive, and WILD.
People with the TIM THREADWELL (SP?) mindset will always end up as a statistic sooner or later----stay away from the bears and if you are in bear country, be prepared to defend /protect yourself.

But he made the bears respect him...

I liked the interviews with the Native Americans in the area after the moron was eaten. They really opposed his actions. As one said they had lived with the bears for all their history and understood to keep away from them and the bears would generally keep away in return. Then this moron comes out to go play with the bears and teach them to have no problems getting close to the slow moving, defenseless, fatty, hairless apes.

14 posts. One post mentions a specific firearm two mention some kind of firearm. 11 posts do not even discuss firearms.

Do we need to close this?

Sad part is, you are wrong. The bear is acting just like mother bears do, and women do about their young.
Perfectly perdictable, except most women don't weigh 1000 pounds, run 40 miles an hour, had have fingernails 5 inches long. Except my ex-wife...;)

I don't see how even a fanny pack with a .44 or bigger would have been much help. Gives you a chance, but, getting knocked off a bike, by essentially a car with claws???

Pretty clear mom bear wasn't trying to eat the biker, or, she'd be dead.

Would the biker have been in violation of Federal law, since it was a park, for carrying a firearm?

In general, how would you protect yourself on a bicycle, in Alaska, in a Federal Park, or outside a Federal park?
Blaring music? Bear spray? .500JRH?
Bells???
