Be aware

While it would be a great step forward, don't forget that just because a majority wants it doesn't mean it happens in congress. Rules give chairmen a great leeway in letting things actually get to a vote. Waxman (D-CA) has overview of this in the house, and Reid in the senate has already broken many rules this past year to keep gun votes from coming up in the senate and forcing Clinton/Obama, etc. to actually vote on an issue in an election year.

I'm not optimistic.

From thomas:

"Latest Major Action: 3/27/2007 Referred to House subcommittee. Status: Referred to the Subcommittee on Federal Workforce, Post Office, and the District of Columbia.
Note: On 7/24/2008, a motion was filed to discharge the Rules Committee from consideration of H.Res. 1331, which provides for the consideration of H.R. 1399. A discharge petition requires 218 signatures for further action. (Discharge Petition No. 110-14: text with signatures.)"

There were 166 signatures on 110-14, as of 1 AUG 08. Does this indicate the bill might make it out of the committee and to the floor, or simply that it can get pidgeonholed somewhere else?
