Bauer .25

Does anyone know which parts will exchange between a Bauer .25 and a Browning baby .25?. I'm mostly interested in mags and grips, etc.
Thanks for info.

I have owned and sold about 5 of these turkeys. They all worked for the first 50 rounds and after that they all became jam-a-matics.
The magazine's do interchange between the Browning and the Baurer. Also the barrels interchange. I blew up a baby Browning once and put a stanless steel Bauer barrel in it with no problems. I had to hand polish the rough exterior to make it worthy of being installed in the first class baby browning. Only a collector looking for the Browning proof marks would have known that the barrel was not original and it had the bonus of being stainles steel. W.R.

As stated, mags, grips, and the barrel certainly interchange between them. I suspect that some internal parts will too, though I've never tried. I had one, then I got a really nice Baby Browning and sold it, kept the Browning. :)

I just don't see how you could get five bad Bauers in a row. I have the Baby Browing, PSP-25, and a Bauer that have never had a malfunction. And I've shot each way more than 50 rounds each. More like 250 rounds each. Great fun. What brand ammo were you shooting?

Pretty hard to imagine five bad ones in a row, unless you were hand picking them. :) Mine shot fine, I just wanted the real thing for my collection.

The Bauer I have has evidently been fired a lot for a .25. The slide is very loose. I took the gun apart and see no signs of rough tooling or bad parts. If the guns shoots fine for 50 rounds, I would think that it needs cleaning. Because of the close tolerances, fouling probably has more of an effect on the little Bauer.

If this gun is a copy of the Browning, then I guess I could replace everything inside with Browning parts and have a stainless copy of the Baby. The parts are still available and relatively cheap. I'll try to get to the range this week to check reliability. Comments?:)

Do you think that the barrel in your Bauer is stainless also? I think mine just HAS to be. Also, I got an e-mail from a parts company which said that all Baby Browning parts will fit the Bauer. Taking the three apart, everything looks exactly the same. Plus, there just aren't that many parts. I checked for the "looseness" you mentioned and all three have a little. Seems to be a normal thing. I believe you're right on your fouling theory.

Although all this happed way back about 1978 or 1979 I believe that the brands of factory loads I tried were Winchester, Federal and Remington. I also hand loaded some jacketed loads with red dot powder and winchester cases. All these loads worked through several baby brownings that i tested them in. None worked in the Bauer's. I was not the only person during this time period that had trouble with Bauer's. Several friends of mine also bought them and experienced the same problem. The pistols worked fine for the first 50 rounds and then suddenly just quit working period. No wonder they went out of buisness. Good ridence. W.R.

Just one more question.
Could you see any difference in the barrels or feed ramps or anything else between the Baby Brownings and the Bauers?

Thanks,

The workmanship in the Baures that I owned back in the 70's was pretty crude compared to the excellent workmanship of the Baby Brownings. Do not misuderstand me. The workmanship was not terrible and was what one would of expected for a pistol that sold for way less than what a new browning would have sold for if it had not been banned in 1968 by the left wing socialists. I am just saying that in no way was the Bauer in the same class as the Browning.
One usually gets what one pays for but I did expect the pistols to at least function. During the same time period I tested some very cheap Targa .25 auto's that sold for about 3 times less money and even though their steel was fairly soft they were an extremely reliable pistol as long as you did not put to many rounds through them. You bought a Targa and test fired it with a box or two or three of ammo and then you carried it and did not fire it for practice anymore. In this function it was an excellent value for the money. Also the external finish was even nicer than the rough looking Bauer. W.R.

I am pretty sure that my Bauer has a stainless barrel. Got to the range today and the gun kept misfeeding. The shells were pointing at the top of the barrel when leaving the mag instead of going in the chamber. I'm sure that the magazine is defective. I'll give it another try.

Your failure does sound like a magazine issue, obviously, that's the first thing to try changing. Besides, you can always use a spare mag, even if that turns out not to be the problem. :)

to John: your problem is probably not a magazine issue. I suggest you try an FN or browning magazine in your Bauer. I would bet my last dollar in the bank that the bauer will work no better with even a good magazine. I have had the same experience you have had with the bauer. I am afraid that you will find that their is nothing you can do to make this pistol work. I tried everything with this pistol including mechanical alterations and custom hand loads. Nothing but nothing worked. Many years ago the people at pistolero magazine also tried many of the same things that I tried. They also failed to make this pistol work. W.r.
