Bass pro in Round Rock

Please tell me you are talking about Texas! That sounds close to the outlet mall. I'm in Waco and haven't heard about it. We got a Cabela's Outpost last year which was a little disappointing but better selection than our Academy.

We recently got a Gander Mountain at 35 and Louis Henna. I've been in there several times, but I haven't bought anything... too expensive.

I get less and less impressed with Cabelas every time I go there. A firearm itself is usually cheaper from a local mom and pop shop. Cabelas uses MSRP or at least closer to it.

When I do go there, I usually try and ask one of the people in the firearms department where their Invector-DS chokes are for the new Browning 725's they sell. The poor guy runs right to the choke aisle, and starts looking. And keeps looking. Their claim to fame, being a big box store is selection. And these guys can't even carry the choke to a shotgun line they sell and activelly "push" in sales advertisements.

Forget about Bass Pro....they're everywhere. If you ever go to Round Rock, the place to go is Round Rock Donuts.:D If any eating establishment ever needed franchised, that's it. Located right next to the round rock the town is named for. Nirvana. Trust me.

You would think that Cabelas and Gander Mountain, with their enhanced buying power, would have cheaper guns and a bigger selection, but no.

I was looking at a Sig 226 at the Cabelas in Buda, and the clerk, who was a really nice and friendly guy, told me on the down low that the same gun at Academy was cheaper. Sure enough, he was right. I drove five minutes to Academy and bought the same gun for less at Academy, about $80 less.

Reds Range and McBrides are cheaper too, on almost every gun.

Don't even get me started on the Gander Mountain, Round Rock. That place deserves to go out of business with their ridiculous prices and snarky customer 'I know better than you because I work at a gun store' service. And on most days, it is empty, and deservedly so.

As far as selection, I was shopping for any .45 with a threaded barrel. Cabelas had none and would not order a 45 with a threaded barrel. I found an HK CT with threaded barrel at McBrides for less than MSRP and got a further haggle discount.

Cabelas will have sales on their guns, which is why I will drive there sometimes. I bought an over under for a real good price at Cabelas. Also, Cabelas has reloading stuff, such as powder and slightly overpriced primers (3.99 per K), but at least they have some. Gander Mountain has no reloading supplies.

I've never been in a Bass Pro Shop. I'm looking forward to it opening. More competition might lower prices.

That's an interesting marketing point. I can save at least 20 to 30 dollars on many guns by going down two exits to Academy and maybe 50 dollars more by waiting for the monthly gun shows.

The big stores cater to the naive buyer. I've bought at Cabela's on a sale and I've built up points on other purchases.
