Basic question about buying NFA?

I looked through the stickies here and a few NFA FAQs on the web but couldn't find an answer, possibly because my question is so basic:

If I want to buy a full-auto firearm as a "regular joe" (i.e. not as a dealer, manufacturer, law enforcement, military, etcetera), am I limited to pre-1986 "transferable" weapons? From reading the rules, that's the impression I'm getting, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something.

That is correct, and that makes your choices/selection limited. Prices will range from around $3500 on the low end to $35,000 on the high end.
