Basic ammo help?

Okay, so I'll be buying my first handgun which is a Glock 26. I do know a few things about ammo. Though I feel it'd be best to just assume I know nothing about ammo. Start from scratch...tell me everything I should know. Any videos or articles here from the internet would be great.

I feel this would be the most simple, I don't want to seem like a new shooter know it all because I'm not. You all have much more experience then I do and I'd be very grateful if you could share some of your knowledge...

I'll chime in and ask/answer questions.

Thanks, Gulley

Bullets 101

Unless you have a Boberg....

They don't go like this:

The bullets don't go in a Boberg like that either but the Boberg pulls the bullets rearward up and out of the mag instead of pushing them forward, up and out.

you bought a glock 26 so im guessing you are using this for cc?
or is this gonna be a gun for hd and target shooting?

hornady critical defense is what i use in my G23 (.40cal) for cc

for target i use winchester ranger (not T-series)

I have over 1500 rds through my G26 and every brand and type of ammo I've run through it has worked flawlessly...absolutely no malfunctions, gun or ammo-related. For the range, I buy whatever is cheapest, usually Federal or Winchester 115gr FMJ. For self-defense, I run Winchester T-Series 127gr +P+ JHP.

That Boberg is pretty cool.

I had a lady ask me at the range the other day if she putting the bullets in her magazine correctly! :o (She was loading it backwards:eek:)

I looked at the 2 handguns she had and determined she shouldn't be shooting either one.

She later asked my friend if I would give her lessons.

For practice, whatever you can find the cheapest in your area or online.

For home defense/ccw look for Corbon DPX, Federal HST, Federal Tactical, Speer Gold Dot, Winchester Ranger-T and Winchester Bonded. Here is a link that will give a little more information on what weights http://m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=19887 I'm sure that Hornady Critical Duty and Winchester PDX1 is good stuff as well it just has not been tested much yet. Everything on the list in the link above has been tested extensively and proven in the real world to work.

Never-mind, another forum got me up to par on everything. Thanks for your interest though.

Glad to hear that you got all your questions you never asked answered somewhere else. Was this the forum?:

http://forum.psychicguild.com/

Just kidding of course. :D

But seriously, you will get better results on the internet in general if you are at least a bit more specific. Asking to be told everything there is to know about 9mm ammo leaves way to much ground to cover. The proper way to do things is to check the wikipedia page on the subject:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/9×19mm_Parabellum

Then Google the subject.

Then when you know enough to have some idea what you still need to know come to a forum like this and ask your actual questions.

Hope this helps in the future!

I use these two mostly. The top is my carry choice. The bottom is my standard range round.

Lawnboy has some good ammo there. The walmart federal is good practice ammo. The winchester white box worked out of my G26 as well, as did everything else I dared stuff into the magazine. For defense, I like the Federal HST and Speer Gold-Dot rounds.

sub compact carry/protection rounds...

For a short barrel or sub compact pistol like a Glock 26 9x19mm, I suggest a factory made JHP or a round designed to function well(feed & cycle 100%) in the shorter barrels.
I'd look at the Speer Gold Dot JHP 124gr +P short barrel, the Hornady Critcal Duty 135gr JHP +P, the Federal Guard Dog 105gr JHP, the Corbon DPX or PowRball loads, the Winchester Ranger T series 124gr JHP +P(bonded), the Winchester NATO FMJ 124gr.
MagSafe sells a cool frangible load for Glock 26/27 models, but I'd avoid these exotic rounds unless you live or work in a urban area.

in my .357 I have Winchester Silvertips.
in my .45 I have Winchester Bonded but I JUST bought some federal guard dog because I've heard good things. I haven't shot them yet.

I'm surprised nobody has posted this before. Avoid the unjacketed lead bullets. The Glock has polygonal rifling which causes faster lead build-up and increased pressures. Most commonly available commercial loads in 9mm are full metal jacket or jacketed hollow points. However, you might see the unjacketed lead bullets if you buy re-manufactured ammo or somebody's handloads.
