Barret M99 Scope Mounting

Hey all -

I just got a Barret M99 and am putting a Leupold 6.5-20x50 scope on it. The rifle comes with 30mm scope rings, but I'm finding that they are a little to short. I can't get a comfortable cheek-weld and therefore decent sight picture.

The FFL that sold the rifle said I could bring it in and they'd try out some different rings. They also said that the M99 was meant to have a Swarovski fixed 10 power scope on it - not the Leupold. IMO, it wouldn't make a difference because its still going to be too short for me and my fat head to get a good cheek-weld.

Any suggestions on finding some proper rings?

TIA

Check with Ron Whitherspoon at Aurora Tactical www.auroratactical.com He is a BIG dealer in ARMS mounts and has an assortment of rings for the .50 BMG rifles manufactured by his company that should work for you. If he doesn't have them for your rifle he can get them. Tell him Jeff from Austin says hi and he might even make you a deal.

Those rings are height adjustable. Are they still too short even extended all the way? A freind of mine has the model 99 with those rings, they are too short for him all the way down but when up......s'ok.

Good Luck

Height adjustable?

Hmmm.... They sure don't look like they'd be adjustable. ...and I don't remember reading anything in the owner's manual about that. I guess I'll have to double check. Won't be able to check until Thursday night since I'm out of town until then.

NYRSCCA, is your buddy's 99 fairly new?

Yep. He got it about 2 or 3 months ago. He also has a leupold scope. (4.5-14x50 LR tactical) It came with the barrett height adjustable rings. I think he had to pay extra for them though. Oops.....my bad. I just checked out the Barrett website and noticed that they also have non adjustable ones. They must be the ones you have. Maybe you could return yours for the adjustables? Barrett seems to have GREAT customer service.

P.S.- You might want to head over to the long range and sniper rifle forum on http://www.assaultweb.net . There is a guy there with the screen name " .50cal" who works for barrett and seems to be a great help.

Good Luck

Holy Cripe! :)

Well, I just got off my lazy butt and called Barret directly. What nice people on the phone! They will do an exchange of my non-adjustable rings for the adjustable ones. Totally cool. I can hardly wait now to get that baby up and running again.

Thanks for the help and suggestions. :D

UPDATE!!!

I got the new height-adjustable rings a while back now and have had a chance to sight it in. They make all the difference in the world! I can actually get a good sight picture now and is fairly comfortable to shoot.

Anyone have a ballistics table for the .50 BMG?

The way I sighted it in is probably a bit unconventional, but I did my best... Here's how I did it:

  1. Bore-sighted at 50 yards with mount in lowest position.
  2. Fired shots and made adjustments to windage and elevation to get on center.
  3. Realized that I was using an awful lot of elevation on the scope, so...
  4. I adjusted the rear height of the scope base and brought the scope's elevation adjustment down to 0.
  5. Fired more shots at 50 yards to get on center again. Had to make very slight adjustments to scope mounts.
  6. Once on center at 50, I moved the target to 200 yards.
  7. At 200 I was shooting OVER the target.
  8. Had to use the 3rd mil-dot above the cross-hair to be on center at 200 yards.
  9. At this point I made no further adjustments other than to tighten all scews to make sure nothing moved further.
    [/list=1]

    Questions:

What's a good zero point for the .50? I can't really see me doing a lot of shooting at less than 300 yards.

At what distance do you think the crosshairs on my scope would hit a center hit? I'm guessing 400-500... but really have no idea.

Did I totally scew-up by building in the elevation in the scope base?
