Barrell Shortening and Porting

Hi everybody I'm new to the forum. I own a Ruger Super Redhawk 44 magnum with the 9 1/2 inch barrell, and have been thinking about having it shortened to 7 or 7 1/2 inches plus having it magna ported. Does the barrell have to be replaced or can it be cut to desired length and ported by a gunsmith? Would this hurt the value of the gun? I have a Leupold 2x scope on it right now and have also thought about switching to a red dot scope, a friend has one on his Super Blackhawk and loves it. Any advice appreciated.

Send it to Magnoport, they will do it all for you, including a refinishing job if you so choose( I like the frosted lookj with the shiny bands. look on their websight to see what I mean). I wouldn't worry about losing value, but don't expect it to go up in value equal to the money you are spending to get it modified. Customized guns often don't sell for any more than stock guns. By the way, if you wanted to get a new gun, I beleive ruger does make a 7.5" Super Redhawk. You would still have to get it ported, but that is always an option. I don't see any problem with a red dot, A 44 magnum handgun is good for about a hundred yards, and a red dot will get you there as easy as a scope.
