Barrel length for sw686+

Do you think a 4" barrel is the best choice for a sw686+?

I think I've seen 5" also. Would that be a better choice?

What about 6" or 3"?

I've got a 686+ in both the "snubby" and the 4".

The snubby is by far easier for carry. The 4" is too large for effective concealed carry but is sure a nice trail gun. Both shoot well but the 4" is, in my hands, more accurate although the snubby does prettly well too. I enjoy them both for what they are. If I only could only have one gun (age old question) it would be the snubby because of its greater ease of carrying. Good shooting:)

For long range work-

get the 6", and you will never look back!:) :D

Re: Barrel size

I have :

586 6" that I can only use as a range gun-- impossible to conceal but fun to shoot!

686 4" prepared for IDPA-- double action only slick trigger so I could but prefer not to carry. Extremely accurate

Dan Wesson 3"--my carry gun. Could not find a 3" 686 although I know that some were made. Will buy a 686 3" if I ever see one. May break down and buy the 686 Snubby.

So many guns: so little time and money!

I have the 686+ in 2-1/2", 3", and 4".
Prefer the 4". I recently bought a second 4" last week, and will buy a third one when I find another one at the right price. I put Uncle Mikes boot grips on the 2-1/2", and sometimes carry it. The 3" just sits in the safe.

Mr. G--

Well shucks!

If you are just hiding that 3" 686 in a safe, pull it out and sell it to me! Is it a + gun that holds 7 rounds or the traditional 6 shooter?

I have the 686+ in 6" as I figured it was a good all round compromise, but I would now get a 4". The 6" is a nice sight radius for marksmanship shooting, but the 4" is just more versitile and maneuverable.

Saw a couple of 686 Customs Service, but they were six shot. When I saw a 3" seven shot I bought it. I have three other seven shots, and like them. The problem with my 3" is that the satin finish is gone on the face of the cylinder. The gun was only fired 150 rounds by the previous owner, but he cleaned the cylinder face with a lead away cloth. It removed the satin finish on the cylinder face! I contacted S&W. They want $59.00 to refinish the cylinder. My other option is to polish the rest of the gun and remove the satin finish, which I might do.
