Barrel lead removal question

I don't have a problem here, but looking for answer for future use if needed. I have the copper or brass brillo like pads, but not sure how to use them. Do you cut a patch like piece out and put it over a bore brush, or cut a long strand and wrap it around the brush? thanks triker

I cut a very small patch-like piece off and wrap it around a brush or a swab. It's hard, for me anyway, to do it neatly, but it works fine just the same. Make sure you have Chore-Boy brand scrubbing pads - they're pure copper. There may be other pure copper ones, but I'm not aware of them. Some others are copper-plated steel.

Solvent will work but Chore Boy gets the lead out in a few passes without mess. I just cut a piece off, which always ends up being some unraveled wad of strands. I wrap enough (experience will teach you how much) around a bronze brush, and get after it. Lead is gone and I mean right now. I keep the same bronze or brass brush for just this purpose. The copper will never hurt the bore.

Kleen Bore has a product called "Lead Away" Gun Cleaning Cloth. It works much the same way in that you cut a patch and run it through the barrel on a jag.

Easy to cut, easy to use and relatively cheap.

+1, and I've found it helps to use a brush for a caliber that's one step down- i.e. a .32-cal brush in a .38, .41-cal brush in a .44, etc. It goes in easier. :D

I also use Chore Boy pads. Just wrap a long strand of it around a worn out brush, pour some Hoppes #9 on the brush and have at it.

The Chore Boy copper pads are amazing. No, you don't cut a patch. All you do is unravel a strand or two and wrap them around your bore brush. Since copper is softer than steel but harder than lead it will scrub your lead out nicely. I have been using it on 9mm, .40 S&W and .45 acp with great results.

The Chore Boy pads are "swaged" and may be unwrapped to a long "net".
I cut the "net" lengthwise and wrap a long piece around a brush.
A few strokes does the trick.

I've had good results, for 50 years now, using the Lewis Lead Remover...it's a cleaning rod that uses what appear to be pieces of copper screening cut in a circular pattern to scrub the lead out. Brownells has them and the replacement "screens" as well.

One note bears repeating, all of the copper appearing kitchen scrubs that I've checked are steel with a copper coating...I took a kitchen frig magnet with me to the store and checked them. One poster here, says that Chore Boy is pure copper...hope so, I'll have to check tho before I'd use it on one of my guns.

Good luck, Rod

I'm not going to suggest that anyone else do this, but I have used the copper-washed steel pads and saw no troubles with any of my handgun barrels. I figure if the pads won't scratch momma's pots and pans it won't scratch the bore of my firearm. (At least I hope the barrel is made of better stuff than most pots and pans...) YMMV

For steel to be flexible enough to make a pot scrubber it can't be very hard.

I agree with Hal-If y'all got a stainless gun the lead away cloths are
great and the way to go.....Of course-Just don't use on a blued gun.

That is what I do until I have enough to get a good tight fit in the barrel. Works good. A good cheap solution. Also with the Lewis tool too which also works. Just makes sure the strands are pure copper.

The Lewis Lead Remover works just fine. The reason I use Chore Boy is because I don't have to order anything, it costs pennies and not dollars, I get it at the grocery store, and it takes the lead out as fast as the Lewis stuff, and just as effectively. Really they are doing the same thing, scrubbing lead deposits out with a softer than steel metal. Generally speaking, if I can do it myself, or make it myself I do.

I love mine, I've had it forever. Those chemical laced cloths work well also but I'd consider wearing gloves when using them. They used to contain mercury, I don't know what's in 'em now but it can't be nice.
