Barrel Inserts

Stay Low

I shoot a Beretta Silver Pigeon II 12 gauge and am interested in opinons on use, safety, accuracy, etc. of barrel inserts in 20 and/or 28 gauge rather than springing for another gun. I found a website called (I think) Chamber Mates. They had subgauge inserts for $270 or so per gauge. Opinions, thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.

I've seen briley tubes in action and they seem to work quite well. Briley tubes extend all the way down the barrel, have their own chokes and extractor or ejectors.

Chambermates only extend a few inches down the barrel, I guess it would fine for fun. Haven't seen them in action.

Now one problem I've heard is with inertia triggers on O/U, the recoil of the subgauges aren't sufficient to cause the switching of barrels but I believe the Silver Pigeon is a mechanical trigger so this isn't a problem for you. Another problem is that they can be a bit heavy.

I'd look into seeing if you can obtain different barrels for your beretta. I believe you can, but I'm uncertain of the cost.

I recently purchased a set of 12 gauge to 28 gauge Chambermates and they work as advertised. I've had them out a couple of times for skeet and I didn't notice my scores dropping. If the target was centered they broke with authority.

The advantage of the Chambermate is that unlike the Briley tubes they only weigh a few ounces and don't significantly change the weight or balance of the gun. The only caution is to use premium ammunition -- Winchester AA or Remington STS. I tried another brand of 28 gauge and it tied up the ejector system.

The previous poster was incorrect about the Silver Pigeon. They have inertia triggers and Chambermate might not reset. The 28 gauge tubes worked fine in my Perazzi but each gun is different. I would suspect this isn't a problem for the Silver Pigeon unless you went down to the .410 tubes.

If you use tubes shorter than full length you MUST clean the barrel thoroughly before shooting full gauge ammo. A box or two of subgauge is not a big deal, but you could be in for a very nasty surprise if you shoot a case of subs then drop in a 12 gauge load. Barrels have been blown up from the accumulation of plastic and crud from tubes that are not full length. The short tubes work OK, just a word of caution.
