Barrel flex

Hey, so I got my Savage 12 LRP a while ago and I just put it in the vice to clean before shooting. I noticed that if I grab the barrel at the end and give it a little tug, I can see the barrel flex in the free floated stock. Is this normal? It is a heavy target barrel and I was not expecting it to flex that much. (few .001 inches, noticeable if you are watching it)

My Savage 10FP also flexes in the stock even though the 10 FP has a heavy barrel - more precisely, the stock moves under the portion of the barrel that is free floated.

It doesn't seem to impact the accuracy of the rifle any.
Its best groups for favorite loads at 100 yards are:
150 grain Nosler Custom Competition bullet = 0.380 inches
168 grain Sierra Match King bullet = 0.326 inches
175 grain Nosler Custom Competiton bullet = 0.426

All those groups were shot with a front bipod attached to the forward sling mount that is under the free floated portion of the barrel so the stock flexing doesn't seem to have much impact on accuracy.

They do flex !!

I may really be going out on a limb but I'd say that all barrels flex, to a certain degree. When I was on ship, we calibrated instruments on our 5" mounts and you could see them flex as well. .... ;)

Be Safe !!!

While barrels do flex when the rifle is fired, you were moving the action and barrel in the stock. As stated above it was the stock that was flexing. The barrel was not bending.
