barrel and trajectory Questions

I am going to turn one of these

into a 16" mid length AR. My question is, what are the differences in barrel coatings, like chrome molly and nitrated, and being chrome lined or not? I like this barrel but am open to better ones

It will be a general purpose rifle, mostly plinking, some occasional matches, and hopefully some classes. Maybe even some whitetail slaying. I am looking for the best balance of accuracy, durability, and price. My budget is around 175 possibly 200.

I will also need handguards, maybe factory or MOE but need em cheap.

On to trajectory

I am attending a black rifle match this weekend and the ranges will be less than 100 yards. My rifle is sighted an inch high at 100 yards. is the trajectory of .223/5.56 flat enough to aim true at say 50 yards or even 25 or will i have to adjust ( btw i am running only irons right now.

The relationship of the height of the iron sites to the bore axis on a typical AR will cause the projectile to intersect with the line of site at two distances. The first is the "initial trajectory cross-over" (battle site zero), and the second is the "zero". The highest point of the arc in the projectile's flight is the mid-range trajectory.

Using XM193 in a "typical" AR, a 200 meter zero (appx. 218-yds) will produce a 50-yard battle site zero (Which also crosses the 100-yard mark at about +1.5"). We found this to be useful for two reasons:

1) A large portion of our students do not have access to private ranges, only public ones; and most public facilities already have a 50-yard range. This makes it at least somewhat more convenient for them to reaffirm battle site zero.

2) Running this 50/200 set-up also keeps the projectile within 2.5" of the line of sight from the muzzle, through the MRT, out to zero, and will not fall below -2.5" until around 230 to 250-yards. Again these are "typical" values we have found to hold true in our courses. These will obviously vary with bullet weight, velocity, etc.

It sounds as if you will probably be just fine at your match. Just keep in mind that as you continue to engage targets that are closer than where your battle site zero is set, the point of impact will also continue to be lower than your point of aim.

thanks that was pretty much what i was hoping to hear.
is there any way to get a two hundred meter zero at 100 yards? like +/- so many inches? i wish my range was longer:(

it worked

i went today and it was SHORT I mean like 25 yards or less, in fact one of the stages you actually double tapped six targets at POINT BLANK ( that dirt confetti that resulted was a HUGE grin factor) but i even hit a clay pigeon on a post at 25 yards by just aiming true. THANKS

.223 trajectory is much like most deer cartridges. Around 2" high at 100 yards will be right at dead-on at 200 and around 6" low at 300. Approximately.
