Bargain Makarov's??

A while back, someone mentioned that the days of the very inexpensive Makarov's were coming back (like $109 or so due to increased supply of imports or something). Is this true? If so, approximately when is this expected to occur? Thanks.

But they don't appear to be new, descriptions are very good or excelleny condition.

My Bulgie was $139.95 12 weeks ago, still in original Cosmo, $109.95 for used doesn't seem so great, YMMV.

SOG's state they are surplus, JG sales are new bulgarian commercial mak's (the 'arsenal' type). FWIH, the commercial and surplus are identical except for the markings.

Apparently both the military/police models and the commercial model are available. Most buyers (or at least those who post on these boards) prefer the military/police model. My experience has been only with the military/police models but I have never experienced any malfunction of any sort in over 2000 rounds through six pistols. I think these pistols would be a bargain at $200.

I have two East German Makarovs and we just shot them this afternoon after we got back from the gun show. They are very accurate and reliable, we have never had a malfunction with ours.

SOG?

How can you order from SOG? Do you have to be and FFL or can you set up a transfer like you do when you order from gunbroker or auctionarms?

Thanks,

Kel

Went to the Manchester, NH gunshow this weekend - here's a report on the Maks I saw for sale:

1. Russian with adj. sights, nice shape - $225

2. A nice Bulgarian milsurp - $175

3. Two other Bulgie milsurps - $150 - but these were so crudded up with cosmoline that their actions would not work. Also, on these two import stamps were very, very poorly done. Looked terrible.

I was looking for an E. German Mak but none to be found.

Great price

All you need to turn these into gems is a little kerosene and some elbow grease. Take it apart, leave it in kerosene overnight, and clean it up. They're the real deal because they're the unissued police/military Mak. Why is the import stamp important?

The commercial Bulgies, the Miltex with sprayed on finish, don't have the same quality blueing as the police/military Bulgies. $150 isn't a bad price at all for an unissued Bulgie.

The only Maks that I'd stay away from are the Miltex (don't know about them) and the commercial Russians (bad adjustable sights). I have an East German, a milsurp Bulgarian, and a commercial Bulgarian (Arsenal). All are equally accurate and reliable.

>All you need to turn these into gems is a little kerosene and >some elbow grease. Take it apart, leave it in kerosene >overnight, and clean it up.

Indeed. Personally, I prefer mineral spirits as opposed to kerosene but either works. Soaking overnight helps but there still is a fair amount of cleaning to do to get *all* the cosmo out. It's been in there since, maybe, 1972 and it's hard, really hard.

>Why is the import stamp important?

As far as function? Not important at all, never said it was. I just think it's too bad that the importer had to mess up the appearance of what was a well-finished pistol with careless, shoddy work.

and I don't think that $150 was a great price, fair but not great. Now $125 would indeed have been a great price and I might have picked up my second milsurp Bulgie for that.

I agree, $125 would have been a good price, and even at that, the dealer is making 25%. My local dealer usually only makes 10%.
Any of you that got stuck with one of these Russian commercial models with the bad adjustable sights can just send them to me. I would hate to see you suffer anymore and am willing to martyr myself for the cause.

Don't be concerned with Miltex quality

Gino:

No need to be concerned with the quality of the Miltex pistols, as they're actually Arsenal manufactured Maks --- Miltex was the U.S. importer. If you go to Makarov.com, you'll find that Miltex owners generally love their pistols. With the exception of my current carry Mak (an Arsenal commercial version which has had quite a bit of customization done to it), my Miltex Special Edition is the most accurate and reliable of the fifteen or so Maks I own/have owned. Lot's of owners report the same results.

The bottom line is that when it comes to reliability, virtually any Mak is a good Mak. $99 for either a Bulgarian milsurp or an Arsenal commercial Mak is a downright steal.

Take care. Marko

Agreed

Yes, the PW Arms stamp is pretty bad, but just pretend it's not there.

$150 for a NIB unissued Bulgie at a show is pretty good. You can get them for less on the web but you need to pay shipping and FFL fees. When you add that up you're at $150 or more.

Unissued Bulgies are getting harder to get, especially if they come with the two matching mags. I kick myself for not getting them when they were going for $120 at shows. :(
