BAR Question?

I saw a nice Browning BAR, Belgium Grade, 30.06, at the gun shop today. It's in very good shape. It is said to be Grade 2. Can anyone tell me what that means, and is $580.00 asking price OK?

Sorry for hijacking the thread, but I thought those were illegal for regular people to own cause they can go full auto

I wouldn't mind having one myself though.

This isnt a WWII military BAR. The name does throw you off so dont feel bad. These are BAR stalker semi auto hunting rifles. Very nice guns. The Belgium ones are highly thought of. $580 sounds very reasonable. I say go for it. Oh and sorry dont know what grade 2 means it seems like they are all grade 2. Check out www.gunbroker.com they usually have some used BAR stalkers for sale. You can compare.

Grade 2 means it has some scroll engraving on the receiver and a little bit nicer wood. Very good rifles, good shooters. A bit heavy, but otherwise a go. Price sounds very good. I would check it out very carefully. Things to look for:
* Peened receiver right in front of the op handle means someone has had trouble getting it cleared if it jammed and used a screwdriver as a prybar.
* Split forearm around the retainer screw means someone may have overtightened the screw and got it jammed in the gas block then had to pay a gunsmith to take it out.
* Buggered screws on all the parts means it's been taken apart by a gun monkey.
* Scratched or worn bluing on the receiver or anodizing on the trigger guard means it's been carried a lot. Not a disqualifier, just ugly.

Have it checked out by a gunsmith, but the BARs are pretty hard to screw up. Sounds like a good deal. If it's clean, jump on it.

This is a Browning BAR (commercial) :

This is also a Browning BAR (military) :

I think what TPAW is inquiring about is the commercial version. Though a Grade 2 1918A2 would be interesting.

Note : This could also probably be called a commercial Browning BAR :

Ohio Ordnance 1918A3 SLR (semi-auto, of course)

Not offered in Grade 2.

(Edit : I take that back. I think they did offer the full auto in the '30's in commercial sales as it was Clyde Barrow's favorite gun.)

is it a mark 2? a mark 2 is the newer model bar with the slide release on the side and it takes different mags. id say thats a good deal, i payed 650 for mine.

Thanks for the response guys. I'm going to check it out today. I'll let you know how I make out.
