I have a BAR belgium made 30-06 mk2 that I keep getting grief over from my out west buddies, they all have at least .300 or larger, and more $$$ going to use it for ELK in COL this year and wondering if their is a advantage to a bolt action like the rem 700 bdl or ruger m-77 mk2.
just don't feel confident @ 200-300 yds. maybe I need more practice. using ballistic silvertips 180gr..great shooting gun, just maybe a bit small for ELK?? any opinions?

200-300 yards for a BAR in .30-06 is no problem. It will certainly take an elk at that range. I would use a bullet of no less than 150 gr. A 165gr-180gr would be better but 150 is fine. Tell your friends to worry about themselves...As long as you can put the bullet where it belongs, you are fine.

i just checked my 338 bar to see if it was on. three were in the orange and the fourth was barly out of it. not bad for free hand. at 150 to 175 yards
