ballistics of short-bbl .22

Hey, I'm new to the forum. I like it. Might be here a while.

I'm thinking about getting this .22 caliber, six-shot, snub-nosed revolver with a 2" barrel. I just want to know the muzzle velocity you all think it might have when firing 40gr. High Velocity .22lr. Thanks.

Well, CCI stinger advertised 1675fps on the box of 22lr. But I'm sure it was out of a 16"-18" rifle barrel.

TBS, obviously a 2" snub can't achieve that using Hi-Vel 22lr, so I say Bill's answer is realistic, although I did prove him wrong on one topic at one time.:D

This is just an article from an old rag I still have where they took a 28 inch barrel and just gradually cut it down to size. Bill's estimation is about right if you look at the pattern of decline in velocities.

Many years ago a buddy had a little Beretta that shot .22 shorts. From a distance of 15 feet he shot an old rusty fire barrel that looked like it was one stiff breeze away from disintegrating.

The bullet bounced back and hit him in the crotch - on the right side - and had him hopping around for 5 or 10 seconds. No damage or bruise he claimed.

I don't know what it proves, but it was funny at the time.

As a point of interest, Combat Handguns recently tested an NAA Pug (a gun I own and love) ... From a one-inch barrel, they got over 1,000 fps from CCI Maxi-Mag HP +V ... now the Pug fires .22 Mag, not LR, but I was amazed to see the speed the round retained from such a small gun .. I'm guessing that round might be going well over 2,000 fps from a 6-inch revolver or longer rifle, but still ... They also got 940 FPS from the round I carry, the CCI Maxi-Mag TNT ...

Based roughly on the charts at NAA for a 1 5/8 inch barrel and a little extrapolation, I'd figure about 750-850 fps for 40 grainers.
