Well I stopped by one of the local gun store's and saw a Bakal 30-06 on the shelf. It's one of those single shot break action guns that you can take down and re-assemble in about 30 seconds.

It looks like one of these

They want $279.00 for it, which is less than a Handi-Rifle, add to that the quick takedown, the chrome lined barrel, and sturdy open sights, I think this would be a nice car gun to keep in the trunk. (I've debated between keeping a 22 in the trunk or a centerfire.)

All the info I find on these is from years ago when they were first imported with no real long term feedback as to quality and durability. Anyone have any feedback as to if this is a good price for one and how well they hold up?

Thanks.

Well in the looks department , it makes a Handi-Rifle look like a booger . It has an internal hammer , and a safety . I can't imagine that they would shoot any worse than an NEF . I'm going to pick one up one day , just to satisfy my curiousity , I'd like a .308 Win. . I did hear something about scope mounting issues , bases may be hard to find . I guess the russian bases don't take Weaver type rings , they are narrow , if I remember correctly . I think they look pretty sharp though . Rem stopped importing them when they bought out Marlin/NEF/H&R . I guess they didn't want competion from themselves ! I have a Baikal over & under 12 Ga. that is a reliable gun . The mechanics are sound but the finish is a bit crude .

I worked with one a few years back when Remington was carrying them.
Shot reasonably well, scope mounts may be a problem, robust gun.
If it appeals, buy it.
Parts COULD be a problem if needed.
Can't say how long it'd hold up, but the Baikal coachguns have been doing well.

For the exact same price you could have this Savage instead:

I think I'd rather have a bolt action with the 3+1 capacity which would also make a solid hunting rifle. If you just want something affordable that you can fold up and keep in the trunk I'd look at one of the many Keltec offerings such as the Sub-16 or the Sub-2000.

I would look at a Handi-Rifle if you are looking for a single shot. Mine is a .243 with a FFII scope and it shoots moa or better with remington cor-lokt 100gr. ammo. I have a bakail 12ga. coach gun and 20ga single shot and both are good shotguns. I think the Handi-Rifle is a better quality rifle. Mine seems to be anyway.
